Charles Wallace Burma Trust Bursaries for Postgraduate Students in UK, 2011

Open to Burmese nationals to pursue postgraduate study in the UK at Masters or Doctoral level, and who need additional funding to help them cover the cost of their studies. The Trust helps Burmese nationals pursue postgraduate study and professional development in the UK. The Board of Trustees has the authority to use the income from the Trust’s funds for Burmese who are resident in Burma/Myanmar to enable them to ‘follow courses of study, research or other educational pursuits which will advance the education of the said individual’.

Postgraduate Student Bursaries are offered twice a year, in May and November, and awards are granted to individual students undertaking, or about to undertake, postgraduate courses in the UK at Masters or Doctoral level and who need additional funding to help them cover the cost of their studies.
The Trust is not primarily a hardship fund and all applicants are required to demonstrate academic excellence as well as financial need. Our maximum grant is £1,500, so applicants must have funds from other sources to cover most of their expenses.

Postdoctoral and PhD positions in Dynamical processes in Open Quantum Systems (DYNamo ERC Project), Spain

Applications are invited for postdoctoral and PhD positions link to a five year project on the topic of Dynamical processes in open quantum systems as part of an European Research Council Advanced grant (DYNamo project). The project will be conducted between the research group in Spain and the Theory group of the Fritz-Haber-Institut in Berlin. The aim of the research project is to develop new concepts for understanding, identifying, and quantifying the different contributions to energy harvesting and storage as well as describing transport mechanisms in natural light harvesting complexes, photovoltaic materials, fluorescent proteins and artificial (nanostructured) devices by means of theories of open quantum systems, non-equilibrium processes and electronic structure.

The successful candidate will work on one (or more) of the following general topics linked to the ERC-DYNamo project:

* Methodological development and application of the theories of open quantum systems and quantum optimal control within time-dependent-density functional theory (TDDFT)and many-body formalisms.
* New functional development within DFT, TDDFT and reduced-density-matrix theory (RDMFT).
* Control/tailor molecular response functions and selective photo-dissociation
* Excitonic energy transfer: metal-oxide hybrids and artificial photosynthesis
* Photocatalysis
* Photo-physics of fluorescent proteins
* Nanocapillarity
* Thermal transport

Qualifications:

We are looking for highly qualified candidates from Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science both at student and postdoctoral level. Ph.D. students must hold a Masters Degree (diploma) requiring the completion of a master thesis or equivalent. Post-docs must hold a Ph.D. degree. A strong background in theoretical condensed matter physics, chemistry or biology is desirable. Previous experience using quantum mechanical methods and atomistic simulations and proficiency in scientific programming are essential.
