PhD Position in Biochemistry, University of Lund, Sweden

PhD studies in biochemistry/biophysical chemistry. The project will focus on physical-chemical studies of protein interactions with other proteins and themselves (aggregation). The studies are aimed at characterization and quantification of energetics and kinetics of interactions and discovery of new protein-protein interactions and/or oligomeric species during a process of aggregation. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with theoreticians.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Basic entry requirements for PhD studies are: a degree at advanced level, courses to an extent of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies. Special requirements for this position: Master of engineering in chemistry or biotechnology, BSc, MSc or some other form of Master exam in biotechnology, chemistry, molecular biotechnology or corresponding education. Undergraduate and advanced courses in physical chemistry are obligatory, and also profound knowledge in mathematics. The position is announced within the Centre of Excellence programme Exclusion and inclusion in the late welfare state: the case of alcohol and drugs. The aim of the research programme is to study ongoing changes in the area of alcohol and drugs in contemporary Sweden using a broad social science perspective. The programme includes three interrelated themes: (1) consumption: problems and norms, (2) alcohol and drug policy and its implications and (3) addiction and dependence: societal reactions, treatment and recovery processes. A more detailed description of the research programme and themes can be found on website. To pursue advanced research within one or several programme themes, to collaborate with other researchers in the programme and to apply for funding for new research projects within the programme.
Eligibility: PhD in a subject relevant to the research programme and theoretical as well as methodological skills of importance to the present research tasks. Previous experience of social alcohol and drug research is a requirement and a documented ability to formulate research projects that generate research support is considered an additional qualification.
To be attached is a copy of the PhD certificate and other certificates the applicant wishes to refer to as well as a CV and publication list. A short summary (1-2 pages) of the applicant’s research activities of specific relevance to the position should also be enclosed. A somewhat longer (5-10 pages) description of the research she/he plans to conduct and how it relates to one or more of the research themes within the programme should also be attached. In addition to specifying aims and methods, it should be clear from the description how the research is related to previous research in this area and how it is relevant to the research programme in question.

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Neuroscience of Drug Abuse, Center for Addictive Behaviors, Sweden

The UCLA Translational Neuroscience of Drug Abuse (TNDA) Program set forth to link several successful UCLA research centers by establishing a unified training program. Each spring applications are accepted for both pre and postdoctoral fellowships (12-month, renewable appointments).
The program is funded by a NIDA T32 Training Grant and provides trainees with the integrative knowledge base needed to conduct bidirectional translational studies including cutting-edge technical laboratory methods, computational approaches in data evaluation, and issues related to ethical treatment of human subjects.  TNDA trainees will have a research project in a specific mentor’s laboratory, but will gain exposure to other areas of drug abuse research through laboratory rotations, common core training elements as well as by formal and informal interaction among key faculty and TNDA leadership. Successful researchers must also become adept at identifying sources of research funding and at preparing fundable applications that can further their independent investigation.  TNDA trainees will receive didactic training and mentoring in these important areas, with emphasis on skills in scientific writing and presentation to enhance dissemination of research findings.
