2011 NPTCI-IDRC Doctoral Research Awards in Economics in Western Africa: Agriculture, environment, gender, poverty reduction, knowledge and innovation, education, and health

The Nouveau programme de troisième cycle interuniversitaire (NPTCI), in partnership with IDRC, announces a third call for applications for the NPTCI-IDRC Doctoral Research Awards in Economics. These awards seek to help doctoral students undertake meaningful field research, critical for the effective and timely completion of their theses and training. The program aims to help meet the increasing demand for economics expertise in West Africa. It also supports NPTCI’s efforts to address key concerns about the development of economics research in the region’s higher education system.

A total of 18 doctoral research awards will be awarded over three years to students pursuing economics research at francophone African universities in the following areas of study: agriculture, environment, gender, poverty reduction, knowledge and innovation, education, and health.The awards seek to help strengthen the capacities of researchers to undertake policy-relevant research to influence the development of sound economic policies and address challenges in the region.The NPTCI-IDRC Doctoral Research Awards are part of the IDRC International Fellowships Program (formerly known as the Southern Junior Researchers Awards Program).

Conocophillips Canada Centennial Scholarship Program by AUCC, Canada: Petroleum studies,Environmental/Sustainable Development Studies

To support young Canadian visionaries who have a drive to make a difference
in the future. The scholarship program encourages individuals with academic excellence and demonstrated leadership. The Centennial scholarship program will have a nationalpresence and will create a legacy for ConocoPhillips Canada Centennial year. Up to four 4 scholarships at the college or university level. 2 award will be open to students pursuing Petroleum studies ,1 award will be open to students pursuing environmental/sustainable development studies .1 award will be open to students in any field of study or discipline. Program must be of a minimum two-year duration. University preparatory programs in any jurisdiction are not eligible (e.g. CEGEPs -pre-university diploma.

N.B. Applicants who have previously held a ConocoPhillips Canada Scholarship will not be eligible to apply for a new scholarship.

NIHR MSc Studentships in Medical Statistics, UK

Four National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded studentships are available for the 2011/12 academic year. These studentships have been made available with the aim of building research capacity in medical statistics, and will be targeted towards students who are planning to go on to work in areas of benefit to the National Health Service. There will be two deadlines – two studentships will be awarded in April, and two in June. Early application is recommended. Unsuccessful applicants for the April award will automatically be reconsidered for the June award.
Successful applicants in the April round will be contacted in the week starting May 1st, and those successful in June will be contacted in the week starting 26th June. Please note that only successful applicants will be contacted. The competition for these studentships is high, and applicants are strongly encouraged to seek alternative funding should their application be unsuccessful. This course provides training in the theory and practice of statistics with special reference to clinical trials, epidemiology and clinical or laboratory research. Applicants should have an Upper Second Class Honours degree of a recognised university in science, or a related subject, or a degree in medicine. Applicants without a mathematically-based first degree must have strong quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas. Graduates pursue careers in various sectors including higher education, research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, central government and national health services.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The deadline for the April round of applications is 8th April 2011. The deadline for the June round of applications is 10th June 2011.
