Multiple PhD Stipends/Scholarships at the AQUA Group, University of Kaiserslautern, Germany

The Software Engineering: Analysis of Quantitative Aspects (AQUA) group is a newly founded research group which focuses on integrating statistical concepts into practical software engineering.

Basically, the benefits can be summarised as follows:
–   You will work on real-world research problems. (There will always be opportunities to cooperate with major software and systems engineering companies, especially in the automotive and avionic domain.)
–   You will be trained in all skills that are required to successfully finish you research project. Our goal is to help you develop the skills, connections, and opportunities required, that ensure a successful postgraduate career.
–    You will create research outputs at the highest standards. In today’s world, it is not only enough to be good, students must be great and competitive compared to other graduate students. Please have a look at our own research outputs.
–  You will get optimal and continuous supervision. Our goal is to give you strong support on your research from a technical side. However, we also try to help our students to develop their personal skills.
–       You study in a friendly and cooperative environment. Kaiserslautern is known for its friendliness.

We require:

safety, and security
–    software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc. )
–    formal methods in system design
–    statistics
–    machine Learning
–     mathematics
Since the projects involve working with other PhD students and industrial partner, communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are especially required.

The scholarship carries a value of around 21,000 Euro p.a., with tuition fee exemption for both German and international students. The selection process will be competitive. If you are interested in aresearch project, please provide the following information (for the

The students will be involved in one of my projects – (1) the development of novel chemometric methods based on Near-Infrared/Mid-Infrared spectroscopy regarding biofuel production and (2) Modeling of biofuel production processes, related economic analysis, and process optimization. The scopes of projects are as follows:
(1) Development of soft-sensor for estimation of biomass feedstock compositions Development of monitoring system for biofuel production
Development of statistical quality control methods for biofuel products
(2) Process modeling of biochemical conversion of biomass using process simulatorsTechno-economic analysis of biofuel production
Integration of biofuel production processes using numerical optimization
These projects are supported by Korean governments, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The successful candidates for both positions will have a strong background in statistics/mathematics and computer programming (C++ and/or MATLAB). In addition, familiarity with commercial/academic software (Simca P, Aspen plus/HYSYS) would be advantage. They also will be fluent in English, have good writing and communication skills, and have reasonable laboratory experience. A master/Ph.D student will receive a monthly stipend plus tuition fee.

Postgraduate Training Fellowship in Medical Statistics for African Scientists, UK

Four National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded studentships are available for the 2011/12 academic year. These studentships have been made available with the aim of building research capacity in medical statistics, and will be targeted towards students who are planning to go on to work in areas of benefit to the National Health Service. There will be two deadlines – two studentships will be awarded in April, and two in June. Early application is recommended. Unsuccessful applicants for the April award will automatically be reconsidered for the June award.
Successful applicants in the April round will be contacted in the week starting May 1st, and those successful in June will be contacted in the week starting 26th June. Please note that only successful applicants will be contacted. The competition for these studentships is high, and applicants are strongly encouraged to seek alternative funding should their application be unsuccessful. This course provides training in the theory and practice of statistics with special reference to clinical trials, epidemiology and clinical or laboratory research. Applicants should have an Upper Second Class Honours degree of a recognised university in science, or a related subject, or a degree in medicine. Applicants without a mathematically-based first degree must have strong quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas. Graduates pursue careers in various sectors including higher education, research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, central government and national health services.
