Postgraduate Training Fellowship in Medical Statistics for African Scientists, UK

Four National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded studentships are available for the 2011/12 academic year. These studentships have been made available with the aim of building research capacity in medical statistics, and will be targeted towards students who are planning to go on to work in areas of benefit to the National Health Service. There will be two deadlines – two studentships will be awarded in April, and two in June. Early application is recommended. Unsuccessful applicants for the April award will automatically be reconsidered for the June award.
Successful applicants in the April round will be contacted in the week starting May 1st, and those successful in June will be contacted in the week starting 26th June. Please note that only successful applicants will be contacted. The competition for these studentships is high, and applicants are strongly encouraged to seek alternative funding should their application be unsuccessful. This course provides training in the theory and practice of statistics with special reference to clinical trials, epidemiology and clinical or laboratory research. Applicants should have an Upper Second Class Honours degree of a recognised university in science, or a related subject, or a degree in medicine. Applicants without a mathematically-based first degree must have strong quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas. Graduates pursue careers in various sectors including higher education, research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, central government and national health services.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The deadline for the April round of applications is 8th April 2011. The deadline for the June round of applications is 10th June 2011.
