Union of the Free
Union of the Free has always been the surest way to defend and to extend the blessing of individual liberty and peace. Only by Union can free men tremendously increase their defensive power with no sacrifice of their individual freedom. Only by uniting their human and material and moral resources through a Great Federal Republic can those with freedom of speech, freeedom of the press, freedom of conscience, freedom of association, freedom of election, and other rights make their person still freer while colossally increasing their defensive and moral power. Only by federating themselves can they remove the temptation to aggression that their division now provides. Only thus can they gain the freeborn strength that encourages the elimination of imperialism and the admission of colonial peoples to full statehood in their Union as they grow ripe for this. Only by Union of the Free can the world’s most productive area mobilize its men, its know-how, and its machines effectively enough to bring the rest of mankind through war’s aftermath and rebuild shattered Europe, Russia, and Asia. Only by Union can the free gain sufficient strength to meet humanity’s needs today, and pursue, inside and outside the United Nations Organization, a generous, peaceful policy toward all nations, one that gives no nation any cause to attack the free, and that gives every people a growing incentive to gain greater liberty. SCHOLARSHIPS
AUD is the beneficiary of the Mayme and Herbert Frank Educational Trust, established in 1989 to support the study of federalism and international integration at the graduate level. AUD therefore created the Frank Educational Fund (FEF) as the program to manage and distribute those funds to deserving students. FEF grants are available to any graduate student of strong academic standing who completes one or more of the following requirements: 1. A thesis or dissertation relating to intertnatinal integration and federalism; 2. Coursework that places major weight on international integration and federalism; or 3. An independent project relating to international integration and federalism. Awards generally range from $500 to $2000 depending on relevance to the goals of the Fund, quality of the project, and academic standing of the applicant. The deadlines for application are April 1 for Fall term awards and October 1 for Spring term awards. Examples of some past projects: 1. A theory-based analysis of possible federal solutions to the Cyprus problem. 2. A paper addressing the development of federal foreign and security policies for Europe, both under the Maastricht Treaty and through complementary measures. 3. A dissertation on the history of AUD, its founder, Clarence Streit, and the Atlantic Union Movement in general. 4. A study of center-periphery relations within the Russian Federation within a conceptual discussion of federalism.
INTERNSHIPS
Internship are available year round and for various lengths of time. Internships are available to college student of any grade level or major, and to recent graduates, but preference will be given to those with considerable interest and/or course work in international relations. As AUD is an all volunteer organization we are unable to pay interns for their work, however some free housing is available at the Association’s headquarters in Washington DC. Interns are involved in all areas of the Association’s operations, and are often able to tailor their work to satisfy their individual interests and abilities. The work tends to involve office work, research, newsletter writing, extensive computer and internet work, and congressional contact. Interns also have the opportunity to participate in various seminars and workshops. For more information contact AUD.
CITIZENS CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION
AUD plans to hold a Citizens Constitutional Convention in the Netherlands in the last week of July 1998. Its purpose is to create an illustrative constitution for a union of the democracies. Approximately 40 eminent scholars, lawyers, retired parliamentarians, business people, and retired military leaders will be invited to attend and participate for a week long session. We are also hoping to have representatives from all NATO nations attend. Board Member Allan Mathews will head the Preparatory Committee assisted by President Tom Hudgens.
