PhD and Postdoctoral Positions, Tilburg Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science, Netherlands

The Tilburg Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science (TiLPS) invites applications for two four-year full-time PhD positions and one two-year postdoc position.Individuals that are encouraged to apply have an interest in logical and computational theories of ordinary reasoning, natural logic, and/or linguistic semantics and want to investigate these topics in a setting of tableau theorem proving and model checking. The positions are part of the program “Towards Logics that Model Natural Reasoning”, funded by a Free Competition grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and led by Reinhard Muskens.

We expect the willingness to work in an international interdisciplinary research environment. The PhD candidates will receive a starting salary of 2042 Euro gross per month in the first year. The salary in the last year is 2612 Euro. The postdoctoral researcher will receive a starting salary ranging from 2977 to 3195 Euro gross per month, depending on experience.Applications (in English) should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a two-page research proposal, and the names of two references. The Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP) is a single strategic goal and work plan for global rice research.GRiSP streamlines current research for development activities of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). GRISP aligns these initiatives with numerous partners and adds new research activities to which science can make significant contributions.

This partnership also builds the capacity of the next generation of rice scientists. Partners are advanced research institutions and universities; national research, education, and extension systems; international and regional fora and development organizations; CGIAR centers; emerging national research systems; the private sector; and civil society organizations.

The objective of the doctoral programs at the graduate school to provide top-class research training. The standardized structure of the doctoral programs at each of the centers of the GESS makes it possible for students and faculty to compare, interact, and collaborate across the three centers. Furthermore, it accounts for the fact that often top research in one field is inspired by developments in neighboring ones. The figure below provides an overview of the time-structure of the research training at the graduate school.

The funding by the German Science Foundation (DFG), first-year students can be fully financed by grants. Students who have successfully passed the first year of doctoral studies, will be funded either through grants or research or teaching assistantships. The decision about the form of continuation finance is made after the first year of doctoral studies. Doctoral grants are in the range of € 1.100 (not subject to income taxation).
