APS Grant For Intercultural or International Projects

The Projects encourages and supports innovative projects that have an intercultural and/or international focus and is to be used for the establishment and implementation of a successful and sustainable project. Projects may aim either to further the intercultural agenda of the Society within the confines of Australia’s national boundaries, or to establish and maintain links between the Society and its members and psychology and psychologists in countries where psychology is an emerging discipline.

Projects may be related to any scientific and/or professional aspects of the discipline, provided that they are consistent with the Society’s mission statement: “To represent, promote and advance psychology within the context of improving community wellbeing and scientific knowledge”. The Grant is not intended to support research projects unless there is a clearly demonstrable outcome in relation to the aims of the Grant. Student research projects are unlikely to be eligible.

Eligible projects may include, but are not restricted to, those that:

* Address scientific and/or professional issues that have intercultural significance for the Australian community, or involve intercultural collaborations amongst Australian psychologists

* Provide further education and training opportunities for psychologists from countries where psychology is an emerging discipline

* Support psychologists from developing countries to attend international conferences in psychology or other relevant events

or

* Foster collaborations between the Society and psychologists overseas who are seeking support to establish and build scientific and professional psychology within their own country or region.

The grant may be used to support any aspect of a successful and sustainable project, including travel, living allowance, training fees and charges, books and equipment, or other costs associated with the project, provided that the funds are expended in accordance with the budget as approved by the selection committee.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a grant, the grantee shall be:

* an elected member of the Society; or

* a psychologist or association from a developing country, nominated by an elected member of the Society.

The Grant application

In order to be considered, the grant application shall include:

1. A statement of rationale, including the project’s aims and objectives and how these reflect the Society’s mission statement;

2. A proposed budget that includes a breakdown of how the funds will be used if the grant application is successful;

3. An acknowledgement that a report suitable for publication in InPsych will be provided to the Society at the completion of the nominated project. The report should encompass any anticipated future engagement or ongoing relationship with the Society arising from receipt of the grant.

4. Supporting documentation, including at least one reference that addresses:

* the eligibility and suitability of the applicant and/or nominee to be the recipient of the grant

* the applicant and/or nominee’s ability to carry the project to completion

* the intercultural and/or international importance of the project, and

* the relevance of the project for the Society.

Applications, including the completed application form, should be no longer that five A4 pages, plus supporting documentation.

Administration of the Grant

1.The APS Grant for Intercultural and/or International Projects is the responsibility of the Board with the assistance of the Manager, Public Interest in the Society’s National Office.

2. A call for nominations will be published each year in InPsych.

3. Nominees should submit four copies of all documentation to the Manager, Public Interest by the due date for applications. Electronic applications are also acceptable.

4. The Public Interest Advisory Group will appoint a selection committee to recommend an appropriate recipient of the Award to the Board. The selection committee may recommend that the funds for the Grant be shared between a number of recipients.

5. The selection committee may seek additional information in the form of external assessor or referees’ reports, letters of support from participating psychology associations or groups, or other independent advice to assist it in choosing the recipient of the Grant.

6. The recipient must confirm their acceptance of the Grant in writing.

7. The successful recipient will be published in InPsych information, along with a short feature on the successful project.

8. The selection committee, through the Public Interest Advisory Group, may recommend to the Board that the Grant should not be awarded in any one year, if it has formed the opinion that there is no grant application that meets the eligibility criteria and is considered to be of sufficient merit.

Value

The value of the Grant is $10,000, which can be divided into smaller Grants for two or three separate projects.

Lionel Murphy Postgraduate Scholarships,Edith Cowan University, Australia

A number of Australian postgraduate scholarships are awarded annually by the Trustees of the Lionel Murphy Foundation. The precise number to be awarded each year and the method of payment is determined by the Trustees in their absolute discretion. The late Mr Justice Lionel Murphy was one of the few judges of the High Court of Australia who has left his mark on the history of the country.

Eligibility requirements
Eligibility criteria:

Applicants should have completed, or be about to complete, an undergraduate degree in law or legal studies, or other appropriate discipline from an Australian tertiary institution, and intend to pursue a postgraduate degree in science, law or legal studies, or other appropriate discipline.

Applicant information:

Scholars are required to give regular interim progress reports and to provide a full report to the Lionel Murphy Foundation on completion of their studies, of their work and other activities undertaken as a Lionel Murphy Scholar.

All applications must be accompanied by three referees’ reports.

Selection:

Preference is given to applicants who propose to study any, or all, of the following:

* The law and the legal system in a social context and their practical application
* Science and/or the law as a means of attaining social justice and human rights and as vehicles for change
* International law as a developing force for peace and as a means of achieving the rule of law in all nations
* Science as a tool for social benefit, particularly in meeting the needs of those most disadvantaged within society
* Other disciplines, where the proposed nature and area of study are likely to promote the goals of social justice and benefit for the disadvantaged.

UTS Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for International Researcher

The Fellowships are extremely prestigious and highly competitive. Applicants must have an outstanding track record relative to opportunity in order to be short-listed.The Fellowships aim to generate research outcomes that will benefit society, strengthen the research profile of UTS and its areas of research strength and excellence, and equip Fellows for research careers.

In 2011, the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme will award Fellowships with the aim of building research capacity in areas of strategic importance to UTS. The number of Fellowships awarded will be dependent on the quality of the candidates and the funding available.

Applicants will have been awarded a research doctoral degree (equivalent to an Australian PhD degree) within 5 years of the closing date. Research doctoral degree candidates whose thesis is under examination at the closing date, and research doctoral degree candidates who will submit their PhD thesis by end of 2010 may also apply. International applications are welcome.

Fellowships are available for a three-year period. A four-year research and teaching option is also available under certain conditions.

Fellows will initially be appointed at Level A, step 4 (A$72,297) or Level B step 1 (A$76,105) per year, under the UTS Academic Staff agreement 2006. Applicants with less than 2 years experience since the award of their PhD should expect to be offered Fellowships at Level A. Project funding of up to $45,000 is also available.

Intending applicants must, in the first instance, contact the Faculty with which they wish to work. They must have a UTS supervisor who must complete a Supervisor’s Statement (doc, 36.5Kb).
