PhD Position in Biocompatible Carbon Nanotube / ß-Ti Alloy Composite Materials / Surface, UK

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 3 years (PhD student, regular employment contract).
The remuneration will be in line with the EC rules for Marie Curie grant holders (Early-Stage Researchers, ITN).
The successful candidate must possess a good degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials or Engineering Science, and should have experience of synthesising and characterising carbon-based nanostructured materials and their composite materials.
The successful candidate will be registered for a DPhil, and will make an application through the normal graduate admissions process.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:
Essential:
• Reasonable experience of working in a Materials Chemistry laboratory, such as practical project work experience or industrial placement.
• Experience of materials science, materials processing and testing and good knowledge of carbon nanotubes synthesis techniques.
• Familiarity with general concepts of nanomaterials and nanomaterials composite characterisation.
• A good understanding of at least two of the following techniques: electron microscopy, Raman, XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and MicroXAM for 3D surface analysis.
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
Desirable:
• Good practical experimental skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.
• Experience in electron microscopy techniques.
