AUN/SEED-Net Master’s Scholarship Program 2011, Thailand: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Environmental Engineering

The AUN/SEED-Net Project with support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provides scholarships to highly qualified young teaching staff and graduating students/young graduates (i.e., potential future faculty staff) of Member Institutions to acquire master’s degrees in the following nine engineering fields at respective Host Institutions in other countries.
In order for AUN/SEED-Net students to produce high quality thesis research of international standard and to ensure the completion of the master’s degree within two years, AUN/SEEDNet provides vital support, in terms of financial and academic, through joint thesis research supervision, to AUN/SEED-Net Master’s students at all Host Institutions. The joint thesis research supervision will be carried out through the Collaborative Research Program, which has been created by each Host Institution for a few well-defined research themes (or research umbrellas) in consultation with Japanese Field Coordinating University, each of which is a collection of interrelated and progressively conducted thesis research topics. Each AUN/SEED-Net student (including doctoral sandwich student) shall conduct thesis research under one of these research themes.

University of Nottingham, Research Associate in Design Research, 2011

Applications are invited for the above post within the Energy and Sustainability Research Division, to design, manufacture and test a prototype for a thermal energy store utilising metal hydrides as a high energy density medium. This project is part of an E.ON International Research Initiative investigating novel thermal energy storage technologies for concentrated solar power plants.

The successful candidate will undertake an exciting project to create detailed specifications and, working with sub-contractors, the conceptual and embodiment design for the thermal store, support infrastructure and testing instrumentation/programme. A particular challenge will be the design and validation of an efficient thermal management system for the store, enabling a fast response when the store is either being charged or discharged. The project requires working within an inter-disciplinary team to design, build and validate the prototype. Operating in a safe manner is important to the project and the candidate will also undertake directed HSS training to ensure an exceptional level of HSS is delivered within the project. As a more senior member of the team, the person appointed will contribute to the training and supervision of PhD students working in the group. Duties will also include the liaison with E.ON and other partners in the project, the preparation and presentation of reports at regular intervals, and the development of academic publications for the dissemination of results to a wider audience.Candidates must hold a BEng (or equivalent) in an appropriate field (for example materials engineering/science, chemical engineering, physical science) and have design experience in engineering, preferably mechanical engineering. They must also have experience/understanding of project management and be able to demonstrate an ability to develop creative solutions to problems. Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment is essential.

PhD Position in Biophysical Chemistry,Lund University, Sweden

The position is linked to the research project “Molecular basis of heat and desiccation tolerance of bacterial cells and spores”, funded by Nestec Ltd, Lund University and the Swedish Research Council. The research work will be carried out at the Division of Biophysical Chemistry, which belongs to the Center for Molecular Protein Science in the Department of Chemistry. The Division is located at Lund University’s Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (Kemicentrum). Kemicentrum is one of the largest research units for chemistry in Scandinavia with a staff of ca 400 and a yearly research budget of ca 350 million SEK. Research within the Division of Biophysical Chemistry ranges from water physics and nuclear spin relaxation theory to fundamental and applied problems in the life sciences, with a focus on protein interactions and dynamics.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

The general eligibility requirement for doctoral studies is a university degree of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level.
We also welcome applications from highly motivated students who have not yet obtained their degree but will do so in the first half of 2011.
