Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Criminology / Sociology of Law, University of Oslo, Norway

The main purpose of the postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for higher academic positions. The fellowship period is 4 years and within the position is assigned a teaching component of 25 %. It is required that the appointed candidate takes courses to be granted certification of basic teaching skills at a university level within the 4 year period.

Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian PhD/doctoral degree. Candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis for an evaluation at a Norwegian research institution before the closing date for the application may also apply. For candidates writing their doctorate at a foreign research institution, the doctoral thesis must be completed and approved within five months after the closing date. The doctoral thesis as well as letter of confirmation from the research institution must be submitted together with the application.

The applicant shall submit a project proposal for the planned research. This proposal shall include a plan for the progress of the research. The applicant is expected to be able to complete the project during the period of appointment. In ranking the applicants, emphasis will be on originality of thought, diversity of perspectives and an analytical approach. Quality and originality rather than quantity will be emphasised.

Applicants are requested to submit a complete overview of their education, former positions and other relevant experience, a complete publication list and up to five scholarly publications. The submitted publications must be in English or in a Scandinavian language unless otherwise specifically agreed upon.

Personal suitability and co-operation skills will receive special attention in the selection process.  Short listed applicants may be invited for an interview at the University of Oslo.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cosmology for International Students, University of Oslo, Norway

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. It presently has 12 permanent professors/associate professors. The Institute employs about 8 postdoctoral research fellows and has about 14 Ph.D. students. The research activity of the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics is concentrated around solar physics and cosmology (http://www.astro.uio.no/).

The fellowship period is 3 years. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution. The position is available from 1st January, 2011.

Job Description: The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has appointed the cosmology group of the Institute as an emerging top-tier research group. The participation in the European Space Agency’s flagship mission PLANCK and the ground based CMB polarization experiment QUIET, and a strong effort in fundamental cosmological theory, act as two foci for consolidating the group and developing it further to become one of Norway’s internationally most visible research groups in the physical sciences.

The position is connected to the project “Cosmological Probes of Modified Gravity”, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The successful applicant is expected to carry out research on cosmological structure formation within theories of gravity beyond General Relativity. The research will focus on both the linear and nonlinear regime of structure formation in the framework of scalar-tensor theories, vector-tensor theories and brane world models. It may involve testing these alternatives to dark energy using N-body simulations and/or lensing and/or the CMB and matter power spectra among others.

Requirements:

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in astronomy/astrophysics, physics or a related discipline.

Doctoral Research Fellowship in Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo, Norway

The Faculty has approximately 130 Ph.D. students divided into seven departments and one center:

The advertised positions are open for all research fields at the Faculty of Humanities. In the actual processing of the applications, however, strategic considerations may be applied in the selection process, such as imminent need for recruitment within certain disciplines or subjects. Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may also be given preference.
The person who is appointed will be enrolled in the Faculty’s organised researcher training. The academic study will terminate in a doctoral thesis which will be defended at the Faculty, leading to a Ph.D.-degree. The successful candidate is expected to contribute into a research group or network, and for a professional development in the environment.

The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. Any previous employment as a research fellow or appointment to another position will in whole or in part be deducted from the appointment time.

Qualifications and personal skills:
In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and on the assumed academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. The short-listed candidates may be called for an interview at the University of Oslo.

Qualifications:
A Master degree or equivalent in an area relevant to the topic of the doctoral dissertation. The masters degree or equivalent has to be achieved by the time of application.
