Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Prizes for Science and Technology 2011

In recognition of the crucial role that Science and Technology plays in socio-economic development, the IDB has, over the years, diversified and increased its assistance to its member countries in this area.

While the IDB continued to direct its efforts and financing to capacity-building, procurement of equipment and establishment of infrastructure in S&T applications, it has realized the necessity to develop a leading scientific elite among S&T institutions in member countries through the pursuit of excellence.

II. Purpose and Objectives
1. The IDB Prizes for Science & Technology are expected to encourage merit institutions and to promote competition among S&T institutions; the prizes would further herald the commitment of the IDB to implement forward-looking policies and integrate advanced S&T applications in the overall development agenda of its member countries. The objectives of the IDB Prizes for Science and Technology are as follows:
2. to promote a sound and fruitful competition among the S&T education and research institutions in its member countries for achieving excellence;
3. to encourage and support the successful institutions in this competition;
4. to raise awareness among decision-makers and intellectuals about the present and potential contribution of S&T to sustainable development; and
5. to highlight S&T related policies and contribution of the IDB.

III. Prize Categories

The IDB Science and Technology Prizes scheme consists of three (3) prizes awarded on the occasion of the Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors. Each prize will consist of a cash award of one hundred thousand (100,000) US dollars, a trophy and a certificate mentioning the name of the winner and its accomplishments.

The Prizes are awarded only to institutions (not to individuals) in IDB member countries in the following categories:
Category 1:Outstanding scientific or technological contribution to the socio-economic development of a member country.

Category 2:Outstanding contribution to any of the following scientific disciplines: Engineering Sciences; Agriculture; Medicine; Biotechnology; Information Technology; Optoelectronics; Material Sciences; Pharmaceutical Sciences; Industrial Microelectronics; alternative Energy Sources and Nanotechnology.

Category 3:Noted scientific research institutions in the IDB Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs).

Social Sciences: Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship Programme

WBI’s Scholarship and Fellowships Programs are vehicles for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the developing world.The Programs provide opportunities for graduate and postgraduate studies leading to masters and doctoral degrees in development-related fields for mid-career professionals from eligible developing countries.

WBI supplements its training programs by managing three programs:

Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSM)

The RSM Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from eligible countries preparing a doctoral thesis. Research grants cover residence costs for a 5 to 10 month period in a renowned university or research center. Fellows are expected to advance their research work mainly by using the facilities and resources provided by the host institution and by interacting with peers.

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP), sponsored by the Government of Japan

The JJ/WBGSP is for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development.Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank. Scholars are required to return to their home countries on completion of their study Programs and apply their enhanced knowledge and skills to contribute to the development process in their respective regions and communities.

The Japan Indonesia Presidential Scholarship Program (JIPS)

Funded by a grant from the JIPS Program supports PhD studies in an academic field of study covered by ten Indonesian Centers of Excellence participating in the program. Each of these newly established Centers of Excellence is located at a leading higher education institution in the country with a demonstrated track record in the pursuit of excellence. The goal of the program is to promote excellence in research in these Centers to support the Ministry of National Education in its mission to improve the quality of higher education and research in the country.

Description:
The Master represents an original and intensive Continuing Educating for Excellence Project, is a 12-month full time residential course. The Master has an international participation.Teaching areas: quality & excellence, relational communication, fund raising and social responsibility, Management and Human Resources, Communication and Training. ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: a) 25 to 35 years of age; b) university degree in one of the following subject: economics, law, politics, sociology, medicine or in the following field: social work, training, education, psychology, public management, linguistic mediation, agriculture; c) good knowledge of English and/or Italian. The scholarship will award: women and men who: a) are resident and/or come from a developing country listed in OSCE DAC list; b) are resident in Italy or in other countries with a high economic development index, with a total income under the poverty line defined in his/her country by governmental statistical agencies
