Economics | Scholarship for Nigerians and Africans - Part 41

Canterbury College of Business and Economics

These awards were established by the University of Canterbury College of Business and Economics in 2006 to recognise academic and extracurricular achievement of students from secondary schools within New Zealand of either M?ori or Pasifika descent. The first awards were made for tenure in 2007.

1. The awards shall be known as the College of Business and Economics Awards for Excellence.

2. The awards shall be made to students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of M?ori or Pasifika descent, who are about to begin their first year of a Bachelor of Commerce undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury, and who attended a secondary school in New Zealand in the year of application.

3. Up to four awards shall be made annually, two each to students of M?ori descent and students of Pasifika descent enrolling in a Bachelor of Commerce. Awards will not be made when there are no candidates of sufficient merit.

4. Each award shall be tenable for one year and shall normally be taken up in the year following application. A scholar may defer taking up the scholarship for up to one year for the purpose of an appropriate gap year.

5. The awards shall be made by the Academic Board, on the recommendation of a selection panel comprising the following staff of the College of Business and Economics:
a) the Pro-Vice-Chancellor;
b) the College Manager;
c) the Academic Manager;
d) the External Relations Director.

6. The awards shall be made on the following criteria:
a) quality of achievement in the applicant’s NCEA level 2 or 3 results or equivalent qualifications; plus
b) evidence of the applicant’s leadership potential; plus
c) involvement in sport, cultural and/or community activities; plus
d) evidence of the applicant’s contribution to school activities.

7. The awards may not be held with any other scholarship or award that comprises payment of tuition fees.

8. The Council may, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, withdraw an award at any time if satisfied that the student is not diligently pursuing the prescribed course. The University may then require a full or partial refund of the award.

9. Each award will be credited directly to the student’s fees account at the time of enrolment in the Bachelor of Commerce.

10. A condition of acceptance is that each scholar agrees to the University publicising their name, background information provided by the scholar or their school and/or a photograph, and to be reasonably available for any promotional activity surrounding the scholarship.
