The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, established as Civil Engineering College, Calcutta, way back in 1856 with the idea of introducing engineering education in the country, has a long and checkered past. The University was known as Calcutta Civil Engineering College on and from 24th November, 1856, when there were only 10 students and a few instructive staff. From 12th February, 1920 the name was changed to B.E. College Shibpur. The word Shibpur was deleted from 24th March, 1921. Till 1992, it was a constituent college of the Calcutta University. In recognition of its service to the nation for all these years, the college was elevated to the status of a Deemed University in 1992 and the Honourable President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, formally inaugurated Bengal Engineering College (A Deemed University) on March 13, 1993. On 1st October, 2004, the deemed university was elevated to the status of a University with its present name.

PhD Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering, PhD School of Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The Doctoral Programme in Mechanical Engineering is coordinated by the ‘Dipartimento di Meccanica’ – Department of Mechanical Engineering. It enrols slightly less than 10% of the total number of PhD students of the PhD School of Politecnico di Milano. In figures, it enrols an average number of 25 students every year, many of them supported by scholarships from public institutions and private companies. Each student is assigned a tutor, who is a member of the Doctoral Board, and a research supervisor, who is a professor of the Faculty. Educational activities consist of selected courses. Advanced courses (taught in English) dedicated to doctoral students and senior graduate students bring the attendants to the frontiers of knowledge in those research sectors where the Department of Mechanical Engineering excels and is most active.
Dedicated courses on relevant topics are organized yearly by various national and international schools, and offered to our PhD students. All lecturers are prominent at international level in their respective field of expertise.
The PhD students can carry out their study and research activities within the following major research areas.

Basic requirements
The basic requirements are the following:
• Five years education at University level
• Knowledge of the English language at B2-level or higher
• Strong motivation

Scholarship Application Deadline:May 2011 – (exact date to be defined). Deadline for submission of applications. Within the deadline the applicants have to fill in and submit the online application form. Also those applicants who have not graduated at the time of the application but that expect to graduate by the end of December 2011 can submit the application at this time. If selected, their admission to the PhD programme is conditioned by successful graduation by December 2011.

10 Fully-Funded STRIP Scholarships in Engineering at Swansea University, UK

The College of Engineering has  EngD positions available for October 2011, funded by the Steel Technology Research and Innovation Partnership (STRIP). Applicants must have a good first degree in a subject relevant to their project of interest. Applications from graduates in Engineering, Science, Mathematics and Technology will be accepted. Due to funding restrictions, only students from the UK/EU are eligible to apply. These are Steel Training Research and Innovation Partnership (STRIP) funded positions, and include full fees plus an annual stipend of £16,600. Funds for other expenses, including conferences and fieldwork, are also available. Research projects available within this scheme are heavily linked with a variety of industrial partners, including the UK’s largest manufacturing company Tata. Full details of these specific projects can be found on the STRIP website from March onwards. The Steel Training Research and Innovation Partnership (STRIP) invests in the Welsh metals and manufacturing industry by training high calibre people from both an academia and industrial background in metallurgy, corrosion, coatings, manufacturing, mechanical properties and more. The EngD is a PhD level qualification that involves a taught component and a large, 4 year research project defined by and undertaken in  industry.
