PhD Studentship in Ocean Biogeochemistry, MPI-M, Germany

The applicant will be part of the Research Group Ocean Biogeochemistry in the Department The Ocean in the Earth System. The research will focus on reconstructing the ocean carbon cycle and its interactions with climate during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. The main tool will be the existing Earth system model of the MPI-M, which includes the ocean biogeochemistry model HAMOCC. One of the objectives of the project will be to improve our understanding of the PETM and its potential to serve as an analogue of the future climate perturbations due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions.

Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a M.Sc. or diploma in Geosciences, Oceanography, Environmental Sciences, Physics or a related field. Experience, or a strong interest in biogeochemistry and modeling is of advantage. Good programming skills (FORTRAN on Unix platforms) are desirable, since the applicant will use facilities of the high performance computing centre. The working language is English. The MPI-M encourages doctoral students to participate in the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modeling.

Scholarship Application Deadline: before 15th of March 2011

2011 NRF Clean Energy PhD Scholarships: Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science or Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering

Clean energy with emphasis on solar energy, has been identified as a key growth area for Singapore. With the growing global expansion of the clean energy industry, Singapore is well-placed to take the lead in this industry as an R&D base and as a provider of clean energy technologies and solutions.
To expand clean energy R&D and grow the industry, there is a need to increase the clean energy manpower base in Singapore. Graduate scholarships is one of the strategies of the clean energy Programme Office (CEPO) to generate specialist manpower for the clean energy sector. This specialist manpower will build up local research capabilities and provide a source of research leaders in key CEPO areas.

The NRF (Clean Energy) PhD Scholarships offer support for up to four years of academic pursuit, leading to a PhD in related disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science or Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. All research topics should be in the following areas related to Clean Energy, with focus on solar:

* Solar
* Wind
* Fuel cells
* Energy efficiency in green buildings
* Storage
* Smart grid technology
* Carbon capture & utilisation
* Other renewable energies

Scholarship Application Deadline: for the Academic Year starting in August 2011, the closing date for applications is 28 February 2011.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Analytical Chemistry, Sweden

The doctoral project is about supercritical fluid extraction of lipids from microalgae, and the development of kinetic models describing desorption, diffusion and solvation of lipids in liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide. The research will be conducted in collaboration with researchers in chemical engineering, limnology and biotechnology, as well as within a multi-disciplinary collaboration about sustainable development. Analytical technologies that will be used within the project are mainly gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC) and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), with mass spectrpometry (MS/MS), evaporative light scattering (ELSD) and charged aerosol (Corona-CAD) detectors. Department duties, usually laboratory teaching, will be included of up to 20%.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Basic entry requirements for PhD studies are: a degree at advanced level, courses to an extent of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies aquired in Sweden or elsewhere.

Special requirements for this position: master degree in natural science, environmental science or engineering with good knowledges in analytical chemistry. It is a requirement to have conducted a degree project in analytical chemistry (or corresponding) of at least 15 ECTS. It is an advantage if you have previous experience from analytical chemistry work, preferably with different separation techniques and mass spectrometer.
