University of Exeter, Associate Research Fellow in Ecotoxicology of Manufactured Nanoparticles 2011 in UK

Peninsula Medical School, within the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, is widely regarded as the strongest of the new medical schools in the UK. From the outset the School has sought to build an international research reputation, to complement its innovative educational programme, through tight focus on areas of strength and exploitation of its pan-peninsula status.

Based within the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, you will assist in developing a major programme of research within the main areas of interest of the ECEHH including a) evaluation of the effects of environmental chemicals on human health b) effects of climate (change) and oceans on health c) opportunities for health improvement from the environment d) clinical photobiology.

You will study the bioavailability and biological effects of novel next generation nanomaterials on the environment and on human health, supported through close collaboration with physical scientists within the centre and a wider team of collaborating researchers across Europe. You should be educated to degree level or equivalent in a biological or environmental science, and will ideally have some experience in measuring sublethal biological endpoints, bio-imaging techniques, and/or working with cell cultures and aquatic organisms. A PhD in a biological or environmental science would be an advantage.

An enthusiastic interest in environment and human health issues and the ability to work well as part of a team would be an advantage. This is a fixed-term position until 31st December 2012. The post will be appointed to the University of Exeter and will be based in Truro. Please note that we are unable to apply for a Certificate of Sponsorship for this post.

Salary will be on the Associate Research Fellow scale of £24,273 – £27,319, with access to further contribution points rising to £30,747.

University of Exeter, Research Fellow Life and Environmental Sciences 2011 in UK

Fixed term contract for 18 months commencing on 1 April 2011

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow on the project “Conditioning Demand – Older People, Diversity and Thermal Experience” which is led by University of Manchester in collaboration with Exeter, Cardiff and Lancaster Universities. The Exeter element of the project is led by Professor Patrick Devine-Wright in the Geography department within the College of Life and Environment Sciences. The project is part of the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council’s People, Energy and Buildings programme.

The postholder will primarily be involved in devising, undertaking and reporting the findings of field research in the Devon area. This work will feed into the project’s main research aim, which is to better understand the diversity and dynamics of thermal experiences in the ageing populations of the UK and France. The project team will conduct empirical research on ageing populations and energy-efficient technologies in the UK and France to understand how comfort is shaped by both social and material factors.

We are seeking candidates with a relevant PhD and research experience. Candidates should have excellent research skills particularly in qualitative methods, be able to work independently and collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries and be able to conduct fieldwork in the region. Ideally you should also have experience of working on energy technologies and/or ageing populations.
