2011 Sagan Fellowships, USA

The Sagan Fellowships will support outstanding recent postdoctoral scientists to conduct independent research that is broadly related to the science goals of the NASA Exoplanet Exploration program. The primary goal of missions within this program is to discover and characterize planetary systems and Earth-like planets around nearby stars. Sagan Fellowships are joined by two other NASA astrophysics theme-based fellowship programs: the Einstein Fellowship Program which supports the Physics of the Cosmos research, and the Hubble Fellowship Program which supports Cosmic Origins research.

The proposed research may be theoretical, observational, or instrumental. This program is open to applicants of any nationality who have earned (or will have earned) their doctoral degrees on or after January 1, 2008, in astronomy, physics, or related disciplines. The fellowships are tenable at U.S. host institutions of the fellows’ choice, subject to a maximum of one new fellow per host institution per year. The duration of the fellowship is up to three years: an initial one-year appointment and two annual renewals contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of NASA funds.

We anticipate awarding 6 fellowships in 2011. Please note that these are postdoctoral Fellowships only. Previous Michelson Fellowship holders are fully eligible to apply.

A complete application will include:

1. Completed application submission form
2. Curriculum vitae and list of major publications and all first-author papers
3. Summary of previous and current research (not to exceed 3 pages including figures, tables, and references)
4. Research proposal (not to exceed 3 pages including figures, tables, and references)
5. Three (3) letters of reference each not to exceed two pages. One of the reference letters may come from the applicants advisor, however this is not a requirement. These letters are submitted through a web interface.
6. Endorsement letter from the Host Institution.

The deadline for both applications and letters of reference is Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 4 PM PDT. Offers will be made before February 1, 2011, and new appointments are expected to begin on or about September 1, 2011.

Phyllis Irene Grey Fellowships in Veterinary Science – Postgraduate, New Zealand

These Fellowships are established under the terms of the Will of the late Phyllis Irene Grey.

1. There shall be Fellowships to be called the Phyllis Irene Grey Fellowships in Veterinary Science.

2. The Fellowships shall be open to female Veterinary Science students with a particular interest in animal health research.

3. The Fellowships shall be used –

(a) to pursue a course of study in research into animal health for the Bachelor of Philosophy into animal health;

(b) to pursue a course of study towards a postgraduate degree or diploma in research into animal health;

(c) to assist in the payment of education towards the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree.

4. The Fellowships shall be awarded annually and shall have a maximum value of $1,000 per annum for an undergraduate and $3,000 per annum for a graduate. A lesser or greater amount may apply depending on the available income, or proportion which may also be used to support the research of the recipient, this to be nominated at the time of the award.

5 If, for any reason, there are no applicants, or applicants are deemed unsuitable, the income shall be accumulated and according to the judgment of the University, either more Fellowships or a Fellowship of greater value shall be offered later.

6. The Fellowships shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Executive of the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences.

7. Application forms are available from the Research and Postgraduate Studies Office, IVABS, and should be submitted to the Graduate Research School by 1 December for the year preceding that in which the award is made. However, in special circumstances and when finance permits consideration may be given to applications received other than by the normal closing date.

8. Applicants should include in their application, their curriculum vitae, academic record and any material establishing financial need.

Reagan-Fascell Democracy International Fellowship Program, USA

The opportunity  is to spend five months at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington DC, in order to un-dertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; engage with counterparts; conduct research and writing; con-sider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates.
Support: Located within NED’s International Forum for Democratic Studies, the program provides a rich intellectual setting for educational exchange and professional development. The Forum also publishes the Journal of Democracy, holds conferences, and provides access to NED’s library. The program offers the support of a research associate and facilitates fellows’ outreach to Washington’s advocacy, media, academic, and policy communities. All fellowships include a monthly stipend, health insurance, and roundtrip travel reimbursement. The program does not provide financial assis-tance for accompanying family or other dependents.
Participation: The program runs two five-month fellowship sessions per year, during which fellows work full time on their projects. Practitioners focus on strategies and best practices for developing de-mocracy in their country of interest; scholars conduct original research for publication. Projects may address the economic, political, social, legal, or cultural aspects of democratic development and include a range of methodologies and approaches. The program hosts an active calendar of events for fellows, including an introduction to NED and its partner institutions, seminars, roundtables, and other activi-ties. Fellows are expected to present their work and prepare a written product during their stay.
Eligibility: While the program is intended primarily for individuals from developing and aspir-ing democracies, distinguished scholars from the United States and other established democra-cies are eligible to apply. Practitioners and journalists are expected to have substantial work ex-perience in their fields, while scholars are expected to have a Ph.D., or academic equivalent, at the time of application. The program does not fund professional training, fieldwork, or students working toward a degree. A working knowledge of English is required.
Dates: Fall Session: October 2011–February 2012; Spring Session: March–July 2012.

Application: The application deadline is Monday, November 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in April 2011.
