Erasmus Mundus MARES Scholarship 2011, Belgium

MARES is a three-year world-class Joint Doctoral Programme offered by a consortium of 24 partner institutions (11 full partners and 13 associated members) originating from 14 countries.
Ghent University (Belgium) is the coordinator of MARES.
The MARES Doctoral Programme was approved for funding by EU in July 2010. First Doctoral candidates will start in the programme from September 2011 onwards. Applications for doctoral candidates will be open from 16 November 2010 onwards.
All MARES doctoral candidates will study with two of the partner institutions and will be awarded a joint Ph.D. degree (Doctorate in Marine Sciences).
In connection with the annual call for applications, the MARES doctoral programme will publish a catalogue of MARES PhD research topics within the applied scientific fields of Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation.

Erasmsu Mundus: International MSc. in Environmental Technology and Engineering

The IMETE programme intensively promotes networking and exchange of knowledge and experience between different nationalities, in particular with scholars and students from developing countries and countries in transition, which are rapidly growing markets for the application of environmental technologies.
IMETE is offered by a consortium consisting of 3 leading Higher Education Institutes: Ghent University (UGent, Gent, Belgium), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands), and Institute of Chemical Technology Prague (ICTP, Prague, Czech Republic). Numerous associated partners from all over the world contribute to the programme. (more information).

Student mobility within Europe is an integral part of the programme, which contains 120 ECTS (2 years). During the programme, students study at Delft (The Nederlands), Prague (Czech Republic) and Gent (Belgium). The master thesis research is carried out in one of these locations, or in one of the many associated partner institutions all over the world.

Research Scholarship for Foriegn candidates for a Joint Doctorate, Belgium

The PhD-student has to stay minimum 6 months and maximum 24 months at Ghent University. The stay may be divided into several periods within the span of 4 years.No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nor on the age of the applicant.
Who can apply
?
This call is open to both foreign and Belgian candidates who are enrolled as a PhD student at a non-Flemish university or institution for higher education who want to take a joint doctorate at both their home institution and Ghent University.
How does it work?
The candidate applies for this funding jointly with a promoter of Ghent University. To find a promoter candidates can browse through the list of faculties.

The Research Council makes a selection of the applications. The selection is based on the evaluation of the project, the added value of the stay at Ghent University for the joint doctorate, the qualifications of the applicant and the scientific potential of both the promoter’s research group and the research group at the partner institution.
The applications must be submitted in English.

How much funding is involved?
The candidate can apply for either a PhD scholarship or for cofunding for his/her stay at Ghent University, depending on whether the candidate already receives a scholarship from the home institution/country during the stay at Ghent University.

The maximum amount for this scholarship is € 81.940 for 24 months (consisting of a grant of ± € 74.500 and a bench-fee of € 7.440 intended for the Ghent University promoter).

The cofunding consist of a fixed amount of € 1.000 per month’s stay at Ghent University to cover (part of) the costs for travel, accommodation, insurances, etc. plus a bench-fee of € 310 per month intended for the Ghent University promoter.
