2011 Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research, University of Virginia School of Medicine, USA

The University of Virginia School of Medicine offers summer research internship opportunities to qualified college undergraduates considering a career in biomedical research. The program targets, but is not limited to, racially and ethnically diverse students in their junior and senior years. Interns receive $4,412 toward summer expenses. In addition, housing and travel to and from Charlottesville are provided.

Our inaugural program was held in the summer of 1992. The program has recently hosted approximately 35 students each year.The Summer Research Internship Program provides an outstanding environment to learn first hand about a career in biomedical research. Many of our former SRIP participants have matriculated into M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs, including at UVa.

Two-Year DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates, India

Under this scheme, Engineering GraduatesĀ  who are selected for the Training School programme and who also have secured admission for MTech/ MChemEngg in select institutes and specializationsare paid stipend and tuition fee to pursue a MTech/ MChemEngg degree while retaining their employment in DAE. After successful completion of one-year course work at the institute, fellows undertake project work, which is assigned and supervised jointly by a DAE and an institute guide. On successful completion of MTech/ MChemEngg, they are posted as Scientific Officers in DAE. On joining, they are required to first undertake a four-month Orientation Course (OCDF) at the BARC Training School. The DGFS fellows
are enrolled and posted in one of the following units of DAE:
a) BARC, Mumbai b) RRCAT, Indore c) IGCAR, Kalpakkam.
Allocation of a DGFS fellow to a DAE unit is done at the beginning of the MTech/ MChemEngg programme.
Selected candidates are required to execute an agreement and a personal Indemnity Bond to serve
DAE for at least three years after completion of training. Indemnity Bond is for Rs 2,45,000 for OCES trainees and Rs 5,05,000 for DGFS fellows. No third party surety is required.

During Training: (i) Stipend and Allowances: OCES trainees as well as DGFS fellows are paid stipend of Rs 20,000 per month during the period of their training and a one-time book allowance of Rs 5,000, (ii) Boarding and Lodging in DAE/Institute Hostel/Guest House is mandatory.

On Appointment: Appointment in DAE units shall be as a Group A Gazetted Officer of the Government of India except in BHAVINI, NPCIL and UCIL which are governed by the service rules of Corporations.

The Research Internship Program Researching Reality provides a greatly valued and needed learning experience in real-life application of social and economic principles and in teaching college students the skills of research, analysis, writing, and above all critical thinking.

Research Areas

Interns research and write papers on the impact of critical public policies in areas such as livelihood, education, governance and environment.
* How does one become a street vendor or start a school or a community radio?
* How much does your state government spend on primary education?
* How do slum dwellers get water and electricity?
* What is the impact of special economic zones and rent control laws?
* Can public services be provided privately?
* How can we make RTI more effective?
