International PhD Scholarship in Theoretical Physics, Computational Biology, Sweden

The student will work in the area of dynamical modelling of biological networks, in particular in relation to network evolution. Primary biological topics to be addressed are the evolutionary origins and design principles of circadian clocks, but the computational tools and programs to be developed may also be applied to stem cell regulation and other biological systems. There will also be opportunity to do detailed, data-driven modelling of circadian clocks in plants.

The position is open to students of all nationalities who, at the time of starting the scholarship, have completed courses equivalent to at least 240 credits, of which 60 must be at advanced (MSc) level in physics, bioinformatics or computational biology, or who in other ways obtained the equivalent qualifications. In case of uncertainty concerning the applicant’s eligibility, it is advisable to contact the department for clarification.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 14-02-2011

Postdoctoral Position in Neuroinformatics 2011, Sweden

KTH School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) announces a postdoctoral position in neuroinformatics in collaboration with Stockholm Brain Institute (SBI) and international partners
The Department of Computational Biology (CB) at CSC and Nada conducts research in the areas of computational neuroscience, neuroinformatics, neurocomputing, systems biology, bioinformatics and biological physics. The computational neuroscience research is specialized in modelling and simulation of the neuronal networks of the brain as well as brain-inspired computational architectures and algorithms. The methodological approaches span multiple scales, from simulation of subcellular signaling pathways to biophysically detailed or abstract modelling of large-scale neuronal networks. The group is partner of SBI and manages its computational and modelling platform.
Stockholm Brain Institute (SBI) is a brain research consortium in Stockholm with a focus on cognitive and computational neuroscience that joins research groups from Karolinska institutet, KTH, and Stockholm University.
CB currently has an opening for a postdoctoral position at Stockholm University in neuroinformatics aimed at development and use of advanced computational tools for analysis of multidimensional data produced by computational brain models. A focus is on parallel computing in a Linux environment using available high-end cluster supercomputers. The position is partly connected to SBI. Co-supervising of PhD students may take place.

Bio-CARe Programme for Women Scientists, India: Biotechnology

To facilitate the participation of Women Scientists in Biotechnology Research, DBT announces the launch of Bio-CARe Scheme for Career Development of employed/unemployed women scientists who have not received any extra-mural grants in the past. In order to maximize their reach, the schemes are open to applicants (aged 55 years or less on the date of application) from all areas of Life Sciences / biology (including Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Medicine and Bio-Engineering).
Scheme I – Research Grant Opportunity (RGO):
The programme aims at giving project grants to women scientists (employed & unemployed) for whom it would be a first grant. The purpose is to build capacities for women scientists employed fulltime in Universities and small research laboratories or unemployed women scientist after a career break so as to help them undertake independent R&D projects. Under this scheme the women scientists who are unemployed will be provided monthly emoluments ranging from Rs. 35,000/- to 45,000/- p.m. The employed women scientists in addition to salary will get an amount of Rs.5,000/- p.m as an incentive.

Scheme II -Career Re-orientation Fellowship (CRF):
This scheme would be mainly for women scientists who are trained in a particular area, but leave their permanent jobs / or are unemployed and would now like to change their career path to take on newer areas. Specialized skills would be essential and this would require training in the relevant field such as IP management, Bioinformatics, Policy research and analysis, Translational research, Regulation etc. This training could be for a period ranging from 3 months -12 months. Under this scheme the women scientists who are unemployed will be provided a stipend of Rs.25,000/- p.m. and employed scientists will get an amount of Rs.5,000/- p.m as an incentive in addition to their salary.
