2011 PhD Positions in Structural Engineering, Bauhaus University, Germany

The overall aim of the Research training group is to assess the reliability, safety and robustness of numerical models. This evaluation considers a wide range of aspects and models. This includes, but is not restricted to, models that describe loads or the material and structural behavior of systems in structural engineering. Of particular interest are the interactions of these models in complex systems. Their influence on the quality of models of complex coupled systems is to be determined.

We see ourselves as an international research training group. Very good English skills are a prerequisite for internal communication, for publications in scientific journals, and for a mandatory stay abroad, serving the scientific exchange with our international cooperation partners. Good German skills are additionally expected from international applicants.
In order to allow a fast realization of models, of couplings, and of evaluation methods, command of one or several programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab) is of advantage.

In the UK, approximately 7000 people per year are diagnosed with brain cancer, making it about the 10th most common type of cancer in men and the 13th in women. Brain cancer mortalities in children exceed those of leukaemia making it the second highest cause of death. In spite of this, research in this area has not received the attention it merits. Brain tumours differ from most other cancers by their diffusion infiltration of the surrounding normal brain tissue, resulting in complete resection of the tumour by surgery being rarely successful. Consequently, future developments in treatment strategies are likely to be systematic in nature. However, at the present time chemotherapy is very unpredictable with large variation in drug sensitivity demonstrated between individuals.
We have recently shown that liposomes generated from prolipsomes are effective in suppression of glioma cancers.

International PhD Scholarship in the School of Psychology at University of Central Lancashire, UK

The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. Experiences of ‘honour’ related violence (HRV) have been wholly overlooked in terms of psychological research. Significantly, not one empirically-based psychosocial source can be located to inform on the aetiology, nature, or impact of HRV, either for victims or perpetrators. Thus, this specific form of domestic and child abuse remains largely invisible in terms of systematic psychological research and no validated evidence currently exists to inform practice or policy in the UK.
The proposed project will apply psychological theories and research to explore the extent and severity of threats and violence used against and by British-born South Asian males and females residing in the UK, in the name of ‘honour’. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques of data collection will be employed. Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.
