The holder of a postgraduate position has as his/her primary obligation to successfully fulfill his/her third cycle education ending with a PhD degree. Regulations concerning appointment as a full time postgraduate student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
The holder of a postgraduate position is expected to participate actively in the research and teaching environment of the Department. He/she will normally have to perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20 per cent of full time.
The position is placed at the Department of Human Geography, but the employee will actively participate in the activities of the Research School at the Lund University Centre of Excellence for Integration of Social and Natural Dimensions of Sustainability.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To be eligible for third cycle studies an applicant must
1. Have been awarded a second cycle degree
2. Have completed studies the equivalent of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the second cycle level, or
3. Have acquired comparable qualifications in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

University of Lund, PhD studentship in Experimental Medical Science 2011 in Sweden

Monitoring neurodegenerative disease progression using high–field MR imaging and spectroscopy.Parkinson’s disease is characterized by neurodegeneration of specific cell populations in the brain. The pathology is known to involve a process leading to accumulation of abnormal proteins in the cells. In particular, aggregates containing alpha–synuclein is thought to be in the core of the pathology. While in some cases the aggregates and neuropathology is restricted to nigral dopamine neurons in others there is a more widespread pathology that involves also forebrain areas and leads to a behavioral phenotype characterized with not only a motor but also a cognitive deficit.

Basic entry requirements for PhD studies are: a degree at advanced level, courses to an extent of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies aquired in Sweden or elsewhere.Specific qualifications for the project are as follows:
1. Documented knowledge in high field MR physics obtained through documented training in this area.
2. Documented experience in methods needed for the project obtained via practical project work in the laboratory.
3. Advanced level knowledge in written and spoken English. Successful applicant must be able to document ability to write scientific reports in a relevant field.

The student will take part in teaching activities in line with recommendations and requirements to complete a PhD program at the Medical Faculty at Lund University.

PhD Studentship in Combustion Engines: Gas Engine at University of Lund 2011 in Sweden

The Division of Combustion Engines works with next generation engines with less environmental impact. To actively do something about the global emissions of CO2 and other green house gases we need to find a more fuel efficient engine for our vehicles but at the same time we cannot allow local emissions to increase. Div. of Combustion Engines are world leading in the fields of HCCI and the subsequent PPC engine technology. To this highly dynamic research group we are currently looking for three Ph.D. students.

This project aims to improve the understanding of utilization of gaseous fuels in combustion engines. This is the fifth generation of gas engine research at Lund University. The former generations have studied combustion chamber optimization, dilution strategies (lean or EGR), engine control with ion current signals and fuel specifications. In this fifth generation the ignition process of gas will be in focus. It has been shown that with highly diluted gas mixtures it becomes increasingly harder to get a use conventional spark ignition. The general eligibility requirement for doctoral studies is a university degree of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level.Selection to postgraduate studies is based on the estimated ability to perform well in the studies. This estimation is based primarily on the results of the studies on basic and advanced level, in particular:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as course work in engine technology, laser diagnostics, etc.
2. Estimated ability to work independently and to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on a master thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a potential interview.
3. Skills in written and oral communication.
4. Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.
A suitable background for this position is M.Sc. (Civilingenjör) or equivalent. A background in controls or engine processes can be suitable but is no requirement. Mechanical Engineering, Electronic or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar would be suitable specializations. We especially welcome female applicants.
