ACCA Nurture Scholarship Awards 2011, Singapore: Accounting

The ACCA Nurture Scholarship award opens up opportunities to the best of both worlds. Successful candidates will gain a world class accounting qualification, and subsequently develop and build a career with international service firms. Two joint awards are available in 2011 – KPMG LLP and Helmi Talib & Co. These awards are for the July 2011 semester (first examination December 2011).

A Singapore or a Singapore Permanent Resident as at 1 January 2011.
b. Aged between 18 and 23 as at 1 January 2011.
c. Have the minimum of two GCE ‘A’ Levels and three GCSEs (‘O’ Levels) or equivalent in five
separate subjects, including English and Mathematics, or its equivalent.
d. Prepared to pursue the ACCA examinations as a full-time student.
e. Is not currently employed, and will not be employed either in a full-time or a part-time capacity
for the whole duration of the scholarship (3 years).

4 Year PhD Programme in Mathematical Genomics and Medicine, University of Cambridge, UK

Modern genomics promises not only to help uncover the molecular basis of disease, but also to have a major impact on health care through translation of advances in techniques, computation and knowledge into clinical trials and clinical practice. Quantitative analysis is at the heart of this goal, and there is a pressing requirement for researchers with thorough mathematical and statistical expertise, in addition to training in medical genetics and informatics. This PhD programme has been established as a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The programme will provide the opportunity to work at the interface between the mathematical and computational sciences, and genome-scale and translational medical research.
The programme is a four year PhD programme but follows a “1 + 3″ model, comprising a tailored first year of taught modules and research rotations, followed by a three-year research project. All students will have two supervisors: one from mathematics, engineering or other quantitative science background, and the second from a genetics or genomics/biomedical background. Successful applicants will have strong mathematical, statistical and computational skills, and may include exceptional biologists. They will develop quantitative techniques and theoretical approaches and apply them to practical problems in both translational and basic biomedical research. Lulea University of Technology, PhD Position in Signal Processing, Sweden

The Signal Processing Group at the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering is looking for a new PhD student within the field of Measurement Systems Engineering. The topic of the research will be on the development of methods for on-line measurement and analysis of paper pulp properties and their connection to paper quality parameters.

We seek candidates with a MSc./Civ.ing. degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar areas, preferably with a strong interest and experience in mathematics, statistics, experimental design and signal processing. Previous experience in the design of measurement systems is also valuable. The collaborative nature of the project requires the student to be fluent in both Swedish and English, written and spoken.The application should include CV, university transcripts (tests/grades record) and contact details of at least two references.
