International PhD Scholarship in Phospholipid Formulations for Anticancer Therapy, UK

Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.
In the UK, approximately 7000 people per year are diagnosed with brain cancer, making it about the 10th most common type of cancer in men and the 13th in women. Brain cancer mortalities in children exceed those of leukaemia making it the second highest cause of death. In spite of this, research in this area has not received the attention it merits. Brain tumours differ from most other cancers by their diffusion infiltration of the surrounding normal brain tissue, resulting in complete resection of the tumour by surgery being rarely successful. Consequently, future developments in treatment strategies are likely to be systematic in nature. However, at the present time chemotherapy is very unpredictable with large variation in drug sensitivity demonstrated between individuals.
We have recently shown that liposomes generated from prolipsomes are effective in suppression of glioma cancers.

Latin American / PAAO Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship 2011, USA

A one year hands-on pediatric ophthalmology fellowship is available for one qualified Latin American ophthalmologist through the PAAO in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas  and its affiliated Children’s Medical Center The position will include the opportunity for direct patient medical and surgical interactions as well as the opportunity to participate in significant clinical research activities. The candidate must be a member of the PAAO.

  • General ophthalmologist, age 35 years or younger, from Mexico, Central or South America, or the Caribbean.
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English. Candidates must have taken the TOEFL exam and submit their results with their application. Mandatory. Candidates will be interviewed by telephone to gauge their English abilities.
  • Willing to commit for one or two years of training.
  • Completion of a recognized ophthalmology residency in Latin America.
  • Applicants with additional training in or those currently practicing pediatric ophthalmology and/or strabismus will be given preference.
  • Established medical and surgical competence and good depth perception.
  • Highly recommended by chairperson and training program director.
  • Commitment to return to Latin America at conclusion of fellowship training program
  • The candidate must be a member of the PAAO

    Research Grants by National Institutes of Health 2011, USA: Translation of Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies for Blood Diseases

    This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions and organizations that propose collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-Project Director/Principal Investigator research for the development of new technologies needed to utilize stem cells in future cell therapies to treat sickle cell disease and other blood disorders. This initiative focuses on two key areas that are impediments to further progress: (1) development of techniques to efficiently generate hematopoietic cells by either differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (PSC) or by cellular reprogramming to yield sufficient numbers of GMP quality cells for clinical evaluation; and (2) development of protocols that enable the efficient engraftment of hematopoietic cells derived from pluripotent stem cells or derived by cellular reprogramming. Each multidisciplinary application will designate two or more Project Directors/Principal Investigators. This program will be implemented in collaboration with the ongoing NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium and will add separate additional research projects. Extensive collaboration is expected between the existing Consortium Hubs, and the new group(s) are also expected to collaborate extensively with the Consortium Hubs.

    Only the review criteria described below will be considered in the review process. As part of the NIH mission, all applications submitted to the NIH in support of biomedical and behavioral research are evaluated for scientific and technical merit through the NIH peer review system.
