PhD Scholarship in GeoBiosphere Science, Sweden

We have an opening for a Phd scholarship for a highly motivated person to join our research on a high-grade metamorphic section of the Sveconorwegian orogen. It is the Scandinavian equivalent to the Grenville orogen, and the result of collision tectonics at around 1 Ga ago during the assembly of supercontinent Rodinia. The project area in SW Sweden exposes a window into one of the deepest buried and most ductile parts of this mountain chain. The high-grade deformational and metamorphic processes are considered to be of major importance in the evolution and structural build-up of the orogen.

The PhD project focusses on mineral geochemistry and geochronology and is entitled “The effects of metamorphic processes on zircon textures and chemistry in metabasic rocks – implications for the interpretation of continental crust evolution.”

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

The applicant must hold a university degree (MSc/BSc or equivalent) in Earth Sciences at the time of appointment. A strong background in petrology is expected. Fluent spoken and written English is required. The scholarship requires ability to do fieldwork in a boreal landscape. Ability and willingness to travel to conferences, fieldtrips and workshops and analytical work (mainly Sweden and Canada) is essential; so is participation as a teaching assistant in the Geology Programme at Lund University.

Scholarhip Application Deadline:31 March 2011

PhD Scholarship in Development of Novel Pavement, DTU, Denmark: Civil Engineering

The PhD scholarship is integrated in a project called “COOEE – CO2 emission reduction by exploitation of rolling resistance modelling of pavements”. The transport sector contributes with more than 20% of the total emission of CO2 and therefore there is a huge potential in even small reductions of the energy consumption of cars. Reducing the rolling resistance is one of the ways to reduce emissions. The COOEE project will attack the challenge from various angles: development of advanced models for deterioration and aging of pavements, development of new devices for measuring rolling resistance on the road network and development of novel pavement that is optimized with respect to rolling resistance. All these disciplines will be integrated in the road asset management system of the Danish Road Directorate.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a master degree in civil engineering –with a specialization relevant to the project in question – or similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree. Preferably the candidate has an academic track record and previous research experience.

Scholarship Application Deadline:10 April 2011

PhD Scholarship in Soil Science, KNUST, Ghana

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science KNUST is located in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana and in the rich cultural environment of the Ashanti kingdom. The University recognizes the study of Science and Technology as an essential part of its cultural heritage. The University staff value experiential instruction using modern laboratory and field approaches to develop knowledge and skill. The University respects diversity of people and offers equal opportunities to males and females for challenges and self-development.
With the support of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), KNUST has developed and will run a 4 year coursework and research PhD programme in Soil Science. The programme will be hosted in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculture.
The main goal of this new PhD programme at KNUST is to develop and strengthen regional human and institutional capacity to develop innovative and adaptable technologies for halting the rapid soil degradation to improve agricultural productivity in Africa.

Eligibility:
Applications must be nationals of the following West African countries— Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Nigeria.
Scholarships:
AGRA will grant scholarships to some selected candidates on competitive basis. Female candidates will be given priority for scholarship awards. This is a scholarship that covers tuition, and attractive packages for accommodation, book allowance, stipend, and research cost from the program. These details will be provided in the final award letters to successful candidates.
