Scholarship Description: The objective of the project is to acquire detailed functional and structural information of the polyamine biosynthetic enzymes from protozoan parasites causing tropical diseases, especially yhr malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The polyamines constitute a group of cell components that are essential for growth and survival of many human pathogens and polyamine biosynthesis is a potential drug target. The proposed project includes work within areas like parasitology, molecular and structural biology, biochemistry and biophysics.

Eligibility
Basic entry requirements for PhD studies are: a degree at advanced level, courses to an extent of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies aquired in Sweden or elsewhere.

Desirable background for this position are basic knowledge in the disciplines of cell biology, biochemistry, physical chemistry and bioinformatics. Practical experience of work on protein purification, enzymology and protein crystallography work is meritorious.
Good skills in English- written and oral communication is an advantage.
Desirable personal qualities are creativity, goal-oriented, ability to solve problems and think analytically and the ability to work both independently and in groups.

Scholarship Description: The Aspen Institute Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation (PSI) in Washington, DC, offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship three times annually.  The fellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of color. The Hearst Fellow serves as an intern with PSI.  Through this fellowship, PSI seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues and challenges affecting philanthropy, social enterprise, nonprofit organizations, and other actors in the social sector.  Recipients may arrange with their colleges or universities to receive academic credit for this experience.

The Aspen Institute Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation seeks to inform and maximize the impact of grantmaking foundations, nonprofit organizations, social enterprises, and public-private partnerships through leadership development initiatives, convenings, and communications so that each can contribute to the good society at home and abroad.

2010 NNPC/ESSO National Postgraduate Scholarship Awards

In continuation of its efforts to provide opportunities for developing careers in the petroleum industry, Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (EEPNL) awards scholarships to qualified Nigerian graduates who wish to pursue post-graduate studies in Nigerian Universities.

Applications in the underlisted disciplines will be considered:

  • Geosciences
  • Engineering (Chemical, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Electronics, Marine, Mechanical, Petroleum and Sub-Sea)

Essential Requirements:

  1. Must be a graduate of a Nigerian University.
  2. Must possess a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of second class upper division in any of the Engineering or Geosciences disciplines.
  3. Must have provisional admission into an accredited Nigerian University for postgraduate study (M.Sc or M.Eng) in the 2010/2011 academic session.

The NNPC/ESSO scholarship award applies to tuition, books, accommodation and up-keep expenses for the duration of the selected course of study.

Names of short-listed candidates for the qualifying test will be published on the scholarship website and in National Dailies. These candidates will also be contacted with details of the qualifying test via SMS text and email.
