Postdoctoral Research Fellow inLearning and Digital Technologies, Norway

MIRACLE aims to improve science education and the link between schools and science museums by designing a flexible, open-ended learning environment that truly engages and empowers adolescent learners. In the planned MIRACLE learning platform students embark on authentic missions that can be completed through productive learning activities. The MIRACLE platform will be a system for collaborative and productive learning and teaching of science through use of a flexible and adaptive pedagogical approach to learning based on different kinds of knowledge representations (including 3D).

The MIRACLE project is headed by InterMedia, University of Oslo, and InterMedia also designs and evaluates the learning platform. The post-doctoral fellow will be part of the Design of Information Systems group at the Department of Informatics and will work with questions related to design and evaluation of the MIRACLE learning platform particularly concerned with representations in science education. Questions concerned with representation of abstract knowledge are also research topics in The Design of Information Systems group. For this post-doctoral fellowship we value interdisciplinary backgrounds high, in particular combinations of informatics and design of information systems with education/learning sciences, psychology, anthropology and/or sociology.

As part of the appointment, a limited amount of teaching, supervision, or other non-research duties may be assigned (10%).  This position is part of a new research project, with funding from the Norwegian Research Council and additional third year funding from Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.

Requirements:

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in informatics or an interdisciplinary degree with a large component of informatics. Applicants are expected to include a summary of academic specialization and statement of scientific interests. The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines. As part of the appointment, a limited amount of teaching, supervision, or other non-research duties may be assigned (10%). No one can be appointed for more than one period at the same institution.

Postdoctoral Researcher,School of Experimental Psychology

A postdoctoral research position is available on a grant-funded project entitled “The Development of Working Memory” to Professor Chris Jarrold and Dr John Towse (University of Lancaster). The post is for three years from October 2010, and will be based in Bristol. The focus of the grant concerns the factors that constrain ‘complex’ working memory in children, and how these factors change with age and drive academic attainment.

The Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol is a strong and active research department that contains a number of postdoctoral researchers and is committed to their professional development.

It commemorates the affiliation between Sunway University College and Lancaster University in joint degree programmes, currently in the areas of Business, Computer Technology, Hospitality and Psychology.

Value of Scholarship

  • The value of each scholarship is a full reduction in tuition fees only. Scholars are required to make payments toward general fees.
  • Scholarships include a two (2) weeks’ study visit to Lancaster University during the final year of studies (Year 3). Costs covered by Sunway University College and Lancaster University are
    • air fares (economy class) from Kuala Lumpur to Lancaster University and return, and
    • accommodation at Lancaster University

Criteria

  • Applicants are required to achieve outstanding academic results for entry into degree courses.
    • A-Levels: AAA and above
    • Australian Matriculation: TER 95 and above
    • Canadian Matriculation: 95% and above
    • Monash University Foundation Year: 380 and above
    • Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM): AAA and above
    • Unified Examination Council (UEC): 8A1 and above
    • International Baccalaureate: 38 and above
    • Other Foundation: Case-by-case basis
  • In addition to academic excellence, applicants are expected to excel in extra-curricular activities.

  3. Students awaiting pre-university results may apply. However, offer of scholarships will be made when University College receives the official final results.
  4. The scholarship is neither transferable nor exchangeable for cash.
  5. Students receiving financial assistance/ scholarships from other institutions and agencies are not eligible for the scholarships.
  6. Scholarships will be subjected to review at the end of every semester.
  7. Students must pass all examinations and maintain high academic standards (70% grade average), failing which the scholarships can be withdrawn.
  8. The terms and manner in which the scholarship awards are disbursed will be decided by Sunway University College and Lancaster University. All decisions made by the joint Sunway University College – Lancaster University Scholarship Committee are final.
