Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Prizes for Science and Technology 2011

In recognition of the crucial role that Science and Technology plays in socio-economic development, the IDB has, over the years, diversified and increased its assistance to its member countries in this area.

While the IDB continued to direct its efforts and financing to capacity-building, procurement of equipment and establishment of infrastructure in S&T applications, it has realized the necessity to develop a leading scientific elite among S&T institutions in member countries through the pursuit of excellence.

II. Purpose and Objectives
1. The IDB Prizes for Science & Technology are expected to encourage merit institutions and to promote competition among S&T institutions; the prizes would further herald the commitment of the IDB to implement forward-looking policies and integrate advanced S&T applications in the overall development agenda of its member countries. The objectives of the IDB Prizes for Science and Technology are as follows:
2. to promote a sound and fruitful competition among the S&T education and research institutions in its member countries for achieving excellence;
3. to encourage and support the successful institutions in this competition;
4. to raise awareness among decision-makers and intellectuals about the present and potential contribution of S&T to sustainable development; and
5. to highlight S&T related policies and contribution of the IDB.

III. Prize Categories

The IDB Science and Technology Prizes scheme consists of three (3) prizes awarded on the occasion of the Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors. Each prize will consist of a cash award of one hundred thousand (100,000) US dollars, a trophy and a certificate mentioning the name of the winner and its accomplishments.

The Prizes are awarded only to institutions (not to individuals) in IDB member countries in the following categories:
Category 1:Outstanding scientific or technological contribution to the socio-economic development of a member country.

Category 2:Outstanding contribution to any of the following scientific disciplines: Engineering Sciences; Agriculture; Medicine; Biotechnology; Information Technology; Optoelectronics; Material Sciences; Pharmaceutical Sciences; Industrial Microelectronics; alternative Energy Sources and Nanotechnology.

Category 3:Noted scientific research institutions in the IDB Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs).

Further Scholarship Information and Application

Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship

The PhD Scholarship Programme recognises and supports exceptional students who show the potential to make an outstanding contribution to science and computing. This programme supports PhD students in computing and those working at the intersection of computing and the sciences.

Only PhD supervisors should apply. If their project is selected, the supervisor has up to a year to find the best possible student for the project.

Eligibility Criteria:

We usually consider only one application per university department or per laboratory of a national research institution.

Only applications from institutions in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East will be considered; students may be of any nationality, however.

For an application to be considered, the proposed research must be closely related to the research carried out at Microsoft Research in Cambridge. These research topics are:

  • Computational Science
  • Computer-Mediated Living
  • Constraint Reasoning
  • Machine Learning and Perception
  • Online Services and Advertising
  • Programming Principles and Tools
  • Systems and Networking

Application Process:

Applications are on a competitive basis and we anticipate a high level of demand for scholarships (the average selection rate has been around 20 percent over the last six years).

Applications are accepted only through a student’s institution, such as from the PhD supervisor or a departmental secretary. We do not accept applications from students directly.

  • Applications should contain the following:
    • An online web form that includes contact details of supervisor(s) and possible reviewers.
      Ideally, one of the suggested reviewers should be from Microsoft Research. If no suitable Microsoft researcher can be identified, it may mean that the proposed research project is too far from our areas of interest.
    • A project proposal of maximum six (6) A4 pages in 10-point font, including references.
      Accepted formats: plain text or Microsoft Office Word only.
  • The research project proposal should address the following points:
    • Evidence that the research supervisor would be suitable to supervise a PhD student for the proposed research project.
      This may include a short list of the supervisor’s recent and relevant publications. Please consider including the URLs of the publications to make it easier for reviewers to find them.
    • Evidence that the department or laboratory offers a suitable environment for research in the proposed area.
    • Basis for the research (motivations and brief state-of-the-art, including key references).
    • Hypothesis under investigation and main aims.
    • Research strategy with significant milestones if identified.
    • Methods of research (for example, main techniques, experiments, and trials).
    • Details of any collaboration with other departments/research bodies.
    • Expected outcomes (for example, software tools).

Applications must be complete, submitted online, and received by the announced deadline to be considered. Proposals received after this deadline will not be considered.

  • Application deadline: 15 September 2010, 17:00 GMT

NWO Rubicon Postdoctoral Fellowships 2010, Netherlands

The aim of the Rubicon programme is to encourage talented researchers at Dutch universities and research institutes run by KNAW and NWO to dedicate themselves to a career in postdoctoral research. Rubicon offers researchers who have completed their doctorates in the past year the chance to gain experience at a top research institution outside the Netherlands (maximum of two years).

The Rubicon programme also offers talented researchers from abroad the opportunity to obtain grants to spend a maximum of two years in the Netherlands to conduct research.

Who can apply
Postgraduates who are currently engaged in doctoral research or who have been awarded a doctorate in the twelve months preceding the relevant deadline. Applicants who are still engaged in doctoral research may only apply if their supervisor provides a written declaration approving their thesis.

Women especially are urged to apply.

Researchers from abroad may apply

What can be applied for

A period of up to two years at an institution outside the Netherlands or at a Dutch institution. The minimum duration is twelve months. Standard awards have been set both for periods spent abroad and for periods spent in the Netherlands.
When can be applied

* Closing date for submitting applications is 1 September 2010

There are three selection rounds a year for Rubicon grants.
Extra Information

In order to promote mobility among researchers, applications will be admissible only if the candidate is to conduct the research at an institution other than the one where he or she graduated or that awarded his or her doctorate. The research must also be conducted in a country other than the one where the applicant graduated or obtained the doctorate, unless that country is the Netherlands. It is not allowed to combine research at different institutes. Depending on the nature of the project, applicants may conduct field research.

Candidates may apply for a Rubicon grant only once. An application will be deemed to have been made if the application has been accepted for consideration by NWO. Past recipients of Talent grants will not be eligible for consideration under the Rubicon programme. Applications must be submitted by individual researchers and not by pairs or teams of researchers.

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be assessed on the basis of quality criteria (as listed in the brochure which can be downloaded from this website) and certain policy criteria.
Procedure

* Multidisciplinary advisory committees will assess the applications.
* The views of external referees will not be sought.
* The final award decisions will be made by the boards of the relevant divisions/foundation.
* The entire assessment procedure will take approximately 4 months.

Committees

Three multidisciplinary advisory committees will be appointed by NWO:

* the Social Sciences (MaGW) and Humanities (GW) divisions will appoint a single advisory committee for the alpha and gamma cluster;
* the Earth and Life Sciences (ALW) and Medical Sciences (ZonMw) divisions will appoint a single advisory committee for the life sciences cluster;
* and the Physical Sciences (EW), Chemical Sciences (CW) and Physics (N) divisions and the Technology Foundation (STW) will appoint a single advisory committee for the beta cluster.
