Victoria PhD Scholarships – application information

History or background of award
For the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research, one objective being to build up strong research schools at the University, Victoria offers PhD scholarships to support doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

Purpose of award
These Scholarships are intended to encourage doctoral study at Victoria University of Wellington.

Selection criteria
The Scholarships are open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol full time for a PhD at Victoria University or who have commenced their PhD study at Victoria University. It is important to read the scholarship regulations availble from the link above before application.

Applicants with Victoria University ‘offers of study’ of who are current Victoria University PhD students must apply on the application form available from the link at the top of this webpage.

Please note: from 1 January 2010 there are changes to both the process for applying for PhD study at Victoria and applying for a Victoria PhD Scholarship. How these changes affect you is outlined below.

From 1 January 2010, for new PhD applicants there will be one application process for admission to the PhD programme and University and for PhD scholarships. The combined application form will be available from late 2009 on the Faculty of Graduate Research Website www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/scholarships.aspx

Please note: Although applications will be considered from full time students seeking scholarship support for a PhD degree for which they are already enrolled at Victoria, if you have applied for a Victoria PhD scholarship in the past, you must provide updated or additional information to apply for a second round. Such applications must be accompanied by clear support from supervisors.

Tenure of award
Scholarships will normally be tenable for three years. For a student who has already been enrolled for a PhD at Victoria for more than three months at the time when the offer of a Scholarship is made, the maximum length of tenure of the Scholarship will be reduced at the discretion of the Scholarships Committee.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Offers of Victoria Phd Scholarships will be made approximately six weeks after each closing date in March, July and November of the year of application. Because some applicants may in the event decline the offer of a Scholarship with the result that further offers have to be made, it is possible that some applicants will not be finally notified of the success or otherwise of their applications three months after application. If you are unsuccessful you will be notified of this and if you are on the researve list by email in the first instance. Please provide a clear and correct email address.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholarship recipients shall be required to devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a maximum of 600 hours in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor.
Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period not exceeding one year. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their PhD enrolment.
A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research within one month of the last day of the period of the deferment.
If an award is made to an existing PhD candidate the tenure of the award will be reduced.

Additional information
Several types of Victoria PhD Scholarship may be offered. Most successful applicants will be offered a Victoria PhD Scholarship which provide an annual stipend of NZ$21,000 plus tuition fees. However, a small number of Vice Chancellor’s Scholarships will be offered to the top applicants each round. These provide an annual stipend of $24,000 plus tuition fees. A number of Victoria Doctoral Assistantships are also offered each round. These consist of an annual stipend $15,000 plus tuition fees and an emploment component of $5,000.
Applicants, other than those who have completed all of their study at Victoria, must include a certified copy of their academic record from other institutions with this application. Applicants whose degree has been conferred at any university other than a New Zealand University will be considered in two categories:
Category 1 – applicants from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany or Australia must supply an original or certified copy of their university transcript.
Category 2 – applicants from any other country must have their transcript verified and assessed with a course by course evaluation by one of the below educational evaluators:

Postdoctoral Position in Advanced Modelling of Gas-turbine Combustion, Netherlands

The Department of Mechanical Engineering considers as the core of their activities design, realization and analysis of new products, processes and materials. Besides the basis of (solid and fluid) mechanics, materials, control and thermodynamics, parts of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing science are important supporting tools. The field is explored by a combination of modeling using fundamental concepts and applied engineering and technology. Automotive Engineering Science and Micro- amp; Nano-Scale Engineering are important departemental themes. The Mechanical Engineering Department comprises about 1000 students and 250 staff members. In the Combustion Technology Group, research is conducted on combustion processes in domestic and industrial applications. The main purpose of the research is related to the optimization of combustion processes and applications and the reduction of the pollutant emissions of, for instance soot, NO, CO, CO2 and partially unburned hydrocarbons. This is achieved by the development of new modelling and measurement techniques for flames and reacting flows, which is crucial for stimulating further technical developments in several areas in Combustion Technology, such as combustion in domestic and industrial installations, process equipment, biomass systems, gas turbines, internal combustion engines, etc. Tasks In the present project several complicated turbulent combustion phenomena are addressed on the level of modelling issues for future design CFD. The project partners are Siemens Power Group and Rolls-Royce and both aero and stationary combustion is considered. For these companies two Ph.D. students will develop new implementations to handle complex phenomena associated with preferential diffusion, complex combustion modes, quenching etc.. The postdoc will guide these developments and takes care of the theoretical framework within the method of Flamelet Generated Manifolds (FGM or FPI) and associated consistency issues. Requirements We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate who has been graduated from a PhD program (dr.) in turbulent combustion modelling. The candidate should be familiar with the framework of FGM). We are aiming for the best candidates that have strong affinity for theory, (consistent) implementation and at the same time candidates that never lose the focus towards the application of gas-turbine design. The preferred scientist will show a strong personal and scientific growth during the years. Excellent analytical and communication skills, and fluency in written and spoken English are essential. The postdoc should not reject the possibility to stay in the US for 1 year. Postdoctoral Position in Homogeneous Catalysis, Netherlands

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (ST) is one of the nine departments of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). It was established in 1957. The department has approximately 500 employees (411 fte), 16 full professors, 370 undergraduate students (bachelor and masterstudents) and about 170 graduate students (140 Ph.D. and 30 design engineers).The department aspires to be an academic institution for education and research in chemical science and engineering that meets the highest international standards. The aim is to generate and to develop technology and scientific knowledge relevant for the long-term needs of society. Scientific curiosity and the use of newly generated knowledge are the main driving forces for the continuing enhancements of the three chosen fields of expertise: molecular, materials, and process engineering.

The Homogeneous Catalysis Group
The homogeneous catalysis group offers a dynamic international research environment. Research activities span a wide range from fundamental questions to application oriented research. In an integrated approach we are interested in the development of efficient and sustainable catalytic conversions. In mechanistic studies we strive for a deep under­standing of chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective processes on the molecular level, employing (in situ) spectroscopic methods and kinetic studies. Ligand and catalyst design, synthesis, and characterization are an important part in this process. This fundamental insight and knowledge is employed to develop new catalytic conversions and to improve existing routes towards more sustainable processes (e.g. feed-stock diversification and renewables). Catalyst testing and reaction optimization is strongly supported by state of the art automated and parallel testing facilities. For the applicability of homogenous catalysts, separation and recycling are key issues. We aim at the development of generic methods for catalyst immobilization and compartmentalization, towards continuous operation, employing two-phase catalysis and membrane separation techniques. Typically in this field catalyst development and reaction/reactor engineering go hand in hand. Actual projects span from fine chemical applications like asymmetric catalysis for fragrances and pharmaceuticals to large scale intermediates like amines and aldehydes for the polymer, detergent and lubricant sector. Of course this broad range of activities has led to numerous international cooperations with academic and industrial partners. We are actively participating in a range of European research networks and initiatives.

Project
The project is part of a European Research and Training Network (ITN-NanoHost; http://www.nanohost.eu/) within FP7 deadling with homogeneous catalyst immobilization and recycling in the context of process intensification. The project, NanoHost, “Homogeneous Supported Catalyst Technologies: the sustainable approach to highly-selective, fine chemicals production” is a joint effort of 7 partners and 3 associated partners.
The candidate will focus on the synthesis and application of nanostructured organic/inorganic hybrid materials for molecular weight enlarged catalysts (MWE catalysts) in a homogeneous catalytic reaction of industrial relevance. MWE catalysts will be prepared, characterized, and applied in continuously operated reactors equipped with a membrane filtration unit for catalyst compartmentalization.
Relevant kinetic and thermodynamic data will be acquired in multi-batch and continuously operated reactor setups. Based on these initial studies an improved loop reactor unit will be designed, modelled, and built in a close cooperation with other partners.
State-of-the-art equipment and expertise for research in homogeneous catalysis and catalyst immobilization is present (HP-autoclaves, membrane filtration units, Schlenk lines, glove-box, analytical and preparative HPLC, (high pressure) NMR and IR spectroscopy, etc.). Training in a wide range of supplementary skills is offered by the host institution and by special training workshops and secondments arranged by the network.

Profile
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoc with a master degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, with solid knowledge and practical skills in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry or homogeneous catalysis.
