PhD Position in Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry, Denmark

Research will be on microorganisms living in marine water and sediments and it includes several field trips to marine environments around the world. We focus on microorganisms within the sulphur and methane cycle and combine microbial activity and molecular ecology with biogeochemistry and stable isotope analysis. The successful applicant should have interest in one or several of these areas and like to do both laboratory and field studies.

As this is a mobility fellowship, the student’s present degree must have been awarded from a university other than the University of Southern Denmark.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 1 October 2008 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).

PhD Position in Ecophysiology, Denmark

Impact of environmental stress on nitric oxide homeostasis, respiration and gill ion transport mechanisms in fish. Research on the influence of environmental stress (hypoxia, salinity change and other challenging conditions) on physiological mechanisms involves studies at organism, cellular and molecular levels. The investigation employs a variety of techniques, including chemiluminescence detection of nitric oxide metabolites, PCR and immunohistochemistry. The successful applicant should have a background or an interest in the field and some experience with relevant techniques. International Tropical Timber Organisation Fellowship Programme

The goal is to promote the sustainable management of tropical forests, the efficient use and processing of tropical timber, and better economic information about the international trade in tropical timber.
As of November 2009, the Programme, which began in 1989, has enabled more than 1000 young and mid-career people from over 40 countries working for government, research institutions, civil society and the private sector to pursue their professional development and improve their career prospects. The total value of fellowships awarded to date amounts to about US$6.1 million; the Programme supports mainly short-term activities, such as participation in international conferences, training courses and study tours, but also helps people to prepare manuals and monographs and provides small grants for post-graduate study. The maximum amount for a fellowship grant is US$10,000. Only nationals ofITTO member countries are eligible to apply, and fellowships are awarded mainly to nationals of developing member countries.
