Taiwan International Graduate Program, Taiwan: Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics

The Taiwan International Graduate Program is a Ph.D. program, started in 2002, established by Academia Sinica, the foremost research institution of Taiwan. In cooperation with top universities in Taiwan, Academia Sinica offers advanced, inter-disciplinary Ph.D. Programs in nine fields that span the natural and physical sciences, as well as computational linguistics. TIGP students will learn in all-English teaching and research environments, and enjoy access to world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities at Academia Sinica and partner universities. All applicants who are admitted to TIGP will receive a fellowship from Academia Sinica. Fellowship will be granted for applicants who receive admission. The stipend levels are about US$ 11,000 per year. Additionally, the support will be extended to two more years for those students who perform well academically.

2010 TIGP Fellowship, China

Applicants should note the following information:

  1. Please read Fellowship Information and Eligibility Guidelines first.
  2. The Application Deadline is August 29, 2010.
  3. Please submit your application before the deadline. We will not accept any overdue applications.
  4. You may submit your application only once, and once it is submitted, you cannot make any changes.
  5. We will announce the list of Fellowship recipients online around the end of September or early October and will also inform you the result via e-mail.
  6. The following guidelines have been established by Academia Sinica (AS) to encourage Doctors of Medicine, Doctors of Dental Surgery, or Doctors of Dental Medicine to pursue PhD degrees.
  7. Eligibility: The fellowship is open to graduate students with an M.D, D.D.S or D.M.D degree studying at any Ph.D. degree program at AS (including the Taiwan International Graduate Program).
  8. Application Procedures:
    Eligible Ph.D. students who do not currently receive any fellowships are qualified to apply for this fellowship. This fellowship support is for 24 months. The chairman of the Program and the recipient’s advisor should submit a progress report to AS two months before the end of the first year of the fellowship. The recipient may obtain the fellowship for the second year upon approval by the fellowship review committee. The fellowship is granted for a maximum of two years.
  9. The number of recipients each year may vary depending on the need and the budget approved by the President of AS. The benefits of the fellowship are as follows:a.Type I: A Ph.D. student who has a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Surgery, or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, but no clinical training will receive NTD 60,000 per month (a stipend comparable with a Resident’s salary).

    b.Type II: A Ph.D. student who has a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Surgery, or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, and has completed residency training and obtained license will receive NTD 80,000 per month.

  10. AS appoints 3-6 outstanding scholars to form the fellowship review committee responsible for evaluating and determining the qualifications of candidates and the amounts of the fellowship. All appointment letters will be issued by the President of AS, with one member assigned as a chairperson.
  11. The recipients are not allowed to receive any other fellowships granted as monthly salary installments.
  12. The recipients have to fulfill the duties and responsibilities listed below. Recipients who violate the conditions of the fellowship are required to return the full amount of the fellowship.Recipients of type I fellowship must devote full time doing bench research in a laboratory at AS or at a university medical center while receiving the fellowship.Recipients of type II fellowship must devote at least 80% of his/her time doing bench research in a laboratory at AS or at a university medical center while receiving the fellowship. The recipient’s clinical obligation should not exceed two half-days per week at the hospital. And the recipient shall resume working for his/her original employer after obtaining the Ph.D. degree for no less than the award period. Any changes of employment require the approval of the recipient’s original employer.
  13. Recipients must sign a contract prepared by AS.
  14. The guidelines have been approved by the General Assembly of AS and signed by the President of AS into effect.
