2011-2012 Anne Smigel Scholarship at University of Mannitoba, Canada

This fund commemorates a lifetime that Ms Smigel has devoted to education, including ten years as a classroom teacher, nine years as a resource teacher and 25 years as an elementary school principal. Ms Smigel was the first Canadian-born woman of Ukrainian origin to be appointed to the position of principal in the Winnipeg School Division No.

1.Has completed at least 30 credit hours at the University of Manitoba, in any Faculty or School (undergraduate or graduate) or in University.
2.While enrolled in any Faculty or School or in University 1, has completed at least one course (3 credit hours) in Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Studies;
3.Has achieved a high cumulative grade point average (a minimum of 3.0);
4.Enrolls, as a full- or part-time student, in at least one course (3 credit hours) in Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Studies in the year in which this scholarship is tenable, in any Faculty or School at the University of Manitoba; and
5.Best exemplifies an interest and promise in the study of Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Studies, as demonstrated by a combination of a statement of purpose from the applicant and a letter of reference.
Applicants will be required to submit an application consisting of the following:
1.A brief statement of their interest in the study of Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Studies and the reasons as to why they are interested in this particular area,
2.A current academic transcript
3.A letter of reference from a professor at a post-secondary institution and
4.Plans for courses in 2011-12
At a time when the earnings on the fund permit, two or more scholarships may be offered, upon the discretion of the selection committee.
The selection committee shall be named by the Director of the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies.

International Graduate Student Scholarship, University of Manitoba, Canada

Beginning with the 2007/2008 academic session, scholarships will be offered to recognize and reward the excellence of international graduate students pursuing Master’s or Ph.D. degrees at the University of Manitoba. The scholarships will be offered to students who:
(1) are international students (i.e., those in Canada on study permits) continuing in full-time study in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba in either the second year of a two-year Master’s program, the second year of a two-year Ph.D. program, the second or third year of a three-year Ph.D. program, or in the first year of a Ph.D. program after completing a Master’s degree at the University of Manitoba;
(2)are paying the international student tuition fee;
(3)have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 over the equivalent of the last two completed years of study;
(4)show great promise as researchers and as graduate students.
(5)are not recipients of external funding that pays for their tuition
The value of the scholarship is $4,000. Scholarships will be offered until available funds are exhausted. Funding will be confirmed on an annual basis.
