University of Exeter, Associate Research Fellow Epidemiology or Statistics 2011 in UK

Peninsula Medical School, within the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, is widely regarded as the strongest of the new medical schools in the UK. It has established an excellent reputation for high quality educational programmes and has a high quality and expanding research portfolio. From the outset the School has sought to build an international research reputation, to complement its innovative educational programme, through tight focus on areas of strength and exploitation of its pan-peninsula status.

This post will support a grant funded research project on age-related diseases, with a special focus on the effects of common genetic variation. Conditions of interest include cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. There will be opportunities to develop your own research interests within the project.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist to an Associate Research Fellow position. You will have a degree in epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics or equivalent and have a knowledge and experience of undertaking statistical analyses of human study genetic and other data.

A PhD in a relevant subject or evidence of PhD level research outputs would be desirable as would skills in statistical analysis, including use of relevant software

This is a University of Exeter appointment and will be based in Exeter.

Please note that we are unable to apply for a Certificate of Sponsorship for this post.

Salary will be on the Associate Research Fellow scale of £24,273 – £27,319, with access to further contribution points rising to £30,747

Point on scale will be determined by knowledge, skills and experience, and will be clarified following interview. The post will be fixed term until 30th April 2012.

Application Deadline: 8th February 2011

Research Fellowships in History of Medicine, University of Warwick, UK

The Centre for the History of Medicine (CHM) invites applications for a Research Fellow related to the CHM’s Wellcome Trust Strategic Award, Situating Medicine: New Directions in the History of Medicine’. Applications are welcome from internal and external candidates with research expertise in the History of Medicine. The Fellowship is intended for early career researchers who have no more than two year’s postdoctoral research/teaching experience and who have not held a permanent academic post. You will have an excellent academic record and the potential to pursue your chosen research subject at the highest level. You will be expected to conceptualise and conduct a public engagement project related to you own research interest and in line with the CHM’s Wellcome Trust Strategic Award focus areas.

University of Cambridge, Phd Studentship in Pathogen Cell Biology 2011 in UK

Bacterial pathogen subversion of the mammalian actin cytoskeleton

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship, supervised by Prof. Vassilis Koronakis, to research mechanisms underlying bacterial pathogen subversion of the mammalian cytoskeleton. Actin polymerisation is mediated by a complex signalling network requiring small G-protein activation that target N-WASP and the SCAR/WAVE complex to initiate Arp2/3-dependent actin nucleation. The detailed processes by which cellular signal transduction cascades lead to the formation of discrete actin structures remain unresolved. These signalling pathways are hijacked by pathogens like Salmonella and E.coli to promote colonisation, survival and dissemination, deploying virulence (effector) proteins to manipulate host actin dynamics.

The student will dissect key eukaryotic signalling networks targeted by these bacterial pathogens using a multidisciplinary approach involving the culture and infection of mammalian cells, cell biology, fluorescence microscopy, protein biochemistry and molecular genetics. Detailed characterisation of the mechanisms underlying actin polymerisation will not only reveal the molecular basis of disease, but also illuminate fundamental processes in cell biology.

Experience and/or Masters degree is desirable.

How to apply:

Applicants should hold or be about to achieve a First or Upper-Second (2.i) class degree in a relevant subject. Experience and/or Masters degree is desirable.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to formally apply through completion of a Graduate and Scholarship Application Form (GRADSAF) before attending interview.

Applications from ineligible candidates will not be considered.

Application Deadline: 28 February 2011.
