C Wright Mills Scholarship in Sociology and Anthropology, New Zealand

Job Description: This scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of Jean Margaretta Rhoda Morgan and Peter Warmsley Sedgwick, and as a tribute to C. Wright Mills, noted American sociologist.

1. The scholarship shall be known as the C. Wright Mills Scholarship in Sociology and Anthropology.

2. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Council of the University of Canterbury after it has received the recommendation of a Selection Committee consisting of:
i. the Vice-Chancellor or nominee;
ii. the Head of the School of Sociology and Anthropology or nominee;
iii. the donor or nominee;
iv. a member of another Department or School of the University, the said member to be nominated by the donor or nominee.

3. The scholarship shall be open to graduates of any University in New Zealand or of the University of the South Pacific.

4. Candidates for the scholarship shall submit a paper outlining their approach to sociological and anthropological research in the form of a research proposal. The paper shall be typewritten and of not less than 5,000 words in length. The Selection Committee, in making its recommendation concerning the award of the scholarship, shall have regard to the paper submitted by each candidate, and to the contribution the candidate might be expected to make to academic life of the School of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Canterbury.

5. In the event of two or more candidates being considered to be of equal merit, preference shall be given to the candidate whose financial circumstances are such that he or she would have difficulty in completing the course without financial assistance.

6. Tenure of the scholarship shall be conditional upon the successful candidate enrolling for the degree of Master of Arts (by thesis only), or Ph.D., in Sociology or Anthropology at the University of Canterbury. The scholarship shall be taken up for the research and writing of a thesis for the said degree on a topic approved by the selection committee. If the candidate has already commenced a PhD or Masters thesis then a progress report shall be required for consideration by the selection committee.

7. The scholarship may be held concurrently with any bursary, scholarship or fellowship of equal or greater value than this scholarship, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.

8. The scholarship shall be tenable normally for one year but may be extended for a further year on the recommendation of the Academic Board if in the opinion of the selection committee the holder is able to demonstrate by way of a report on the work that satisfactory progress is being made and that the progress is consistent with the criteria for selection.

9. The scholarship may be terminated by the Council at any time on receipt of a report from the selection committee that the conduct or progress of the scholar has been unsatisfactory.

10. Normally one scholarship shall be awarded each year. However, if the accumulated funds permit the Council may award an additional scholarship in any year.

11. If in any year no appointment to the scholarship is made, the income for the year shall be added to the capital of the fund or shall be held in reserve to provide a second scholarship in a subsequent year, as the Council may decide.

12. Conditions for the award of the scholarship may be varied from time to time by the Council of the University on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Dennis William Moore Scholarship

Job Description: The Dennis William Moore Scholarship was established in 1999 as a result of a capital donation to the University of Canterbury from the Estate of Dennis William Moore, a Minister of Religion of Hari Hari and an Electrical Inspector. The capital donation was used to set up the Dennis William Moore Fund.

The scholarship is tenable for a thesis student in astronomy who has been or will be undertaking observational work at Mt John as part of his/her thesis work.

The scholarship shall be known as the Dennis William Moore Scholarship. 4. The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising:
i. the Vice-Chancellor, or nominee;
ii. the Dean of the Faculty of Science
iii. the Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

5. The scholarship may be held with any other bursary, scholarship, prize or fellowship unless the conditions of the other award preclude it, provided that the Selection Committee may in determining the amount of the award take into account the number and nature of any other awards held by the successful applicant.

Canterbury College of Business and Economics

These awards were established by the University of Canterbury College of Business and Economics in 2006 to recognise academic and extracurricular achievement of students from secondary schools within New Zealand of either M?ori or Pasifika descent. The first awards were made for tenure in 2007.

1. The awards shall be known as the College of Business and Economics Awards for Excellence.

2. The awards shall be made to students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of M?ori or Pasifika descent, who are about to begin their first year of a Bachelor of Commerce undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury, and who attended a secondary school in New Zealand in the year of application.

3. Up to four awards shall be made annually, two each to students of M?ori descent and students of Pasifika descent enrolling in a Bachelor of Commerce. Awards will not be made when there are no candidates of sufficient merit.

4. Each award shall be tenable for one year and shall normally be taken up in the year following application. A scholar may defer taking up the scholarship for up to one year for the purpose of an appropriate gap year.

5. The awards shall be made by the Academic Board, on the recommendation of a selection panel comprising the following staff of the College of Business and Economics:
a) the Pro-Vice-Chancellor;
b) the College Manager;
c) the Academic Manager;
d) the External Relations Director.

6. The awards shall be made on the following criteria:
a) quality of achievement in the applicant’s NCEA level 2 or 3 results or equivalent qualifications; plus
b) evidence of the applicant’s leadership potential; plus
c) involvement in sport, cultural and/or community activities; plus
d) evidence of the applicant’s contribution to school activities.

7. The awards may not be held with any other scholarship or award that comprises payment of tuition fees.

8. The Council may, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, withdraw an award at any time if satisfied that the student is not diligently pursuing the prescribed course. The University may then require a full or partial refund of the award.

9. Each award will be credited directly to the student’s fees account at the time of enrolment in the Bachelor of Commerce.

10. A condition of acceptance is that each scholar agrees to the University publicising their name, background information provided by the scholar or their school and/or a photograph, and to be reasonably available for any promotional activity surrounding the scholarship.
