Job Description:The Royal New Zealand Navy established this scholarship in 2005 on the occasion of the decommissioning of the frigate HMNZS Canterbury.

The scholarship marks the long and supportive relationship between the Royal New Zealand Navy and the Province of Canterbury. The purpose is to support school leavers from Canterbury in their first year of undergraduate study at the University of Canterbury in any discipline.

The Royal New Zealand Navy will fund the scholarship from its non-public funds (financed by sailors’ contributions) for 20 years in the first instance and will review the scholarship every three years.

1. The scholarship shall be known as The HMNZS Canterbury Scholarship.

2. The award shall be made annually to a student who:
a) is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; and
b) has resided within the Province of Canterbury for at least 12 months prior to the closing date for applications; and
c) is about to commence the first year of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury; and
d) has applied to enrol at the University of Canterbury by 31 January in the year of enrolment.

3. The scholarship shall be awarded based on the following criteria:
a) quality of achievement at NCEA level 3 or 4 or equivalent university entrance qualifications; and
b) evidence of the applicant’s leadership potential; and
c) involvement in sport, cultural and/or community activities; and
d) demonstration of Royal New Zealand Navy values of comradeship, courage and commitment; and
e) if the choice is in balance, all things being equal, to the child of a serving or ex-Royal New Zealand Navy member.

4. The awardee must commence their programme of study in the year of the award and the award shall be tenable for one year.

5. The awardee must agree to be involved in some publicity at the time of the award, organised by the Royal New Zealand Navy and the University of Canterbury.

6. The award shall be paid in two parts:
a) the tuition fee payable by the awardee, which shall be paid by direct credit to the awardee’s fees account; and
b) any remaining balance may be claimed as course related costs or living expenses during the year.

7. The award shall be made by the University Council on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:
a) the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury or nominee; and
b) the Chief of Navy or nominee; and
c) the Mayor of Christchurch City or nominee.

8. The selection committee may refrain from making an award if, in their opinion, there is no applicant of sufficient merit.

9. The award may not be held with any other scholarship, prize, or award that comprises payment of tuition fees without specific approval.

10. The University Council may terminate or revoke the award at any time on receipt of a report from the selection committee that the conduct or progress of the awardee has been unsatisfactory.

11 The University Council may relax or modify the application of any of these regulations, in exceptional circumstances, in order to avoid hardship to an awardee.

12. Applications should be made on the appropriate form which can be obtained from the Scholarships Office and forwarded to the Scholarships Supervisor, University of Canterbury, by 31 January in the year of the award.

Job Description: The University of Canterbury established these scholarships in 2007 to recognise and support top achieving students from the South Island commencing an undergraduate degree programme.
Previously, Dux awards had been made to students enrolling in 2006 and 2007, as a category of
the UC Emerging Leaders’ Scholarships.

1. The scholarships shall be known as the UC Dux Scholarships.

2. The scholarships shall be awarded to students who intend to begin their first year of an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury, who have completed or are completing a university entrance qualification, and who attended school in the year of nomination.

3. The scholarships shall be awarded by the University Council, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, to the Dux (as defined in clause 5 below) of each recognised secondary school in the South Island in the year prior to enrolment at the University of Canterbury.

4. Each scholarship shall be tenable for one year and normally be taken up in the next year, except that a student undertaking a gap year may defer taking up the scholarship for one year. In special circumstances, application may be made for deferral of the scholarship for two years.

5. The Dux or equivalent top scholar shall be nominated by the School Principal or Deputy Principal. Only the school’s top scholar may be nominated for the award and no reserve nominations will be considered.

6. The scholarships may not be held with any other scholarship or award that comprises payment of tuition fees.

7. The Council may, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, withdraw a scholarship at any time if satisfied that the student is not diligently pursuing the prescribed course, and the University may require a full or partial refund of emolument.

8. Each scholarship will be credited directly to the student’s fees account at the time of enrolment.

9. Nominations for the scholarships will be sought by the University from eligible secondary schools and the scholarship will be offered to the nominated Dux. Acceptances from scholars should be forwarded to the Scholarships Supervisor, University of Canterbury, Private Bag
4800, Christchurch, not later than 5.00 pm on 12 December in the year prior to the year of tenure.

10. A condition of acceptance is that each scholar agrees to the University publicising their name, background information provided by the scholar or their school and/or photograph and to be reasonably available for any such promotional activity surrounding the scholarship.
