Awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), as part of the United Kingdom International Development programme for developing countries, and participating institutions in the UK.
Candidates are normally expected to hold a first degree at either first class or upper second-class level. Candidates are expected to be under 30 years of age and be fluent in written and oral English. Candidates who have already studied for one year or more in a developed country or who possess sufficient resources to self-fund, are not eligible for an award.

Research Assistantship-Economics/Agro-Economics in Dar es Salaam Republic of Tanzania

Under the general supervision of the Head of Program 4 and the direct supervision of the Agricultural Economist in Dar es Salaam, the Research Assistant will have the following responsibilities: Responsibilities: The Research Assistant will be a part of a multi-disciplinary research team with a common goal of and responsible for working to sustain and improve the productivity of and competitivity of rice-based production systems in Africa consistent with Africa Rice Center’s mission and mandate. He/she will assist the program leader in conducting research within the team with the specific tasks that include, but not limited to: • Assist to generate profiles of rice-based production systems in key ecologies along the upland-lowland continuum in Africa. • Assist in identifying opportunities and constraints to improving performance of the rice based systems. • Assist in developing crop budgets and farm models to assess and identify optimal production and resource allocation decisions in rice-based systems along the upland -lowland continuum. • Assist in socio-economic assessment of improved and appropriate technologies for rice-based production systems along& the upland – lowland continuum. • Assisting in the preparation of supports for scientific presentations; • Assisting in the development of documents for meetings and other events; • Assisting in the preparation of training programs; • Participating in training workshops for National Research System partners on survey design, implementation and impact assessment tools and methods. • Assisting in the drafting of scientific publications; • Any other duty assigned by the supervisors.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Remote Sensing and GIS, Cotonou

The Post?Doctoral Fellow will be based at the temporary headquarters of Africa Rice in Cotonou, Benin and will work under the supervision of the Program 2 Leader. She or he will be responsible for:
– Evaluating and applying methodologies for mapping the distribution of rice in different
ecosystems in Africa using remote sensing, GIS and national statistics;
– The development, validation and application of innovative approaches to map abiotic and biotic stress distribution in rice production systems in Africa;
– Performing spatial analysis in a GIS environment to identify suitable areas for adoption of stress?tolerant varieties by combining remote sensing obtained maps and survey data;
-Prepare presentations and publish research results in peer?reviewed journals.
– Developing research proposals, and
– Undertaking any other duties as requested by the Program 2 Leader.
