PhD Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering, PhD School of Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The Doctoral Programme in Mechanical Engineering is coordinated by the ‘Dipartimento di Meccanica’ – Department of Mechanical Engineering. It enrols slightly less than 10% of the total number of PhD students of the PhD School of Politecnico di Milano. In figures, it enrols an average number of 25 students every year, many of them supported by scholarships from public institutions and private companies. Each student is assigned a tutor, who is a member of the Doctoral Board, and a research supervisor, who is a professor of the Faculty. Educational activities consist of selected courses. Advanced courses (taught in English) dedicated to doctoral students and senior graduate students bring the attendants to the frontiers of knowledge in those research sectors where the Department of Mechanical Engineering excels and is most active.
Dedicated courses on relevant topics are organized yearly by various national and international schools, and offered to our PhD students. All lecturers are prominent at international level in their respective field of expertise.
The PhD students can carry out their study and research activities within the following major research areas.

Basic requirements
The basic requirements are the following:
• Five years education at University level
• Knowledge of the English language at B2-level or higher
• Strong motivation

ADBE Consumers and Possessions Studentship, UK: A Cross-Disciplinary Exploration of Sustainable Practices

The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. The need to enhance understanding of human behaviour in order to progress towards sustainable patterns of consumption is well recognised, as is evidence that design of our possessions and surroundings locks us into particular forms of behaviour. This is a cross-disciplinary studentship involving research into how people use their possessions and the built environment with regard to sustainability and the implications of this for design practice. One of its key elements will be to relate knowledge in sustainable architecture, sustainable fashion and sustainable product design. Our past research has found evidence of inconsistent behaviour among consumers with regard to their influence upon the environmental impact of different products. Further research is needed to explain these inconsistencies and the University’s Sustainable Consumption Research Group is currently planning a series of cross-disciplinary seminars. These will explore the use of buildings, clothing, household goods and vehicles and consider factors that may lead them to be used in a sustainable manner and reasons for inconsistencies in user behaviour. Other research at the University has proposed a theoretical case for addressing the effect of the material form of products on people’s behaviour. The University’s OPEN Research Group (Objects, Practices, Experiences and Networks) is currently running a series of events through which different perspectives on materials and materiality are being explored. The output of these two initiatives will underpin this studentship, which is intended to enhance understanding of pro-environmental behaviour change.

2011 PhD Research Studentships at Loughborough University, UK: Sustainable Supply Chains and Organisational Resilience

Based on its excellent Research Assessment Exercise results in 2009, the School of Business and Economics is opening a new multidisciplinary research centre, The Centre for Organisational Resilience, and is seeking to recruit three research students to join the Centre’s vibrant postgraduate community. Three PhD Studentships are available for the July & October 2011 entries (see below), worth up to £13,590 (or any higher figure subsequently determined by EPSRC for its research studentships for 2011-12), plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
The Centre for Organisational Resilience (COR) is seeking to recruit three research students to join its vibrant postgraduate community on three specific projects (one studentship per project): Sustainable Supply Chains and Organisational Resilience: A systems perspective . The proposed research will provide a holistic perspective of looking at the relationship between sustainable supply chains and organizational resilience by using systems thinking. The systems approach will take into consideration not only the various entities involved in sustainable supply chains but also the causal relationships between the factors that enable or prohibit implementing sustainable supply chains within today’s manufacturing environments. The research will also consider the human systems within the supply chain and how these can be modeled to create change and motivation towards implementing sustainable supply chains. The goal is to make manufacturing companies aware that they can become sustainable and resilient by implementing sustainable supply chain. This research will provide the thinking and the tools organizations to become resilient. This project will involve the successful candidate undertaking detailed fieldwork in businesses and with industry.
