Fermilab Fellowships in Theoretical Physics 2011, USA: Theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics

Fermilab announces fellowships for graduate students at U.S. universities who are in the research phase of graduate study in theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics. These fellowships will last for one year (12 months), generally starting in the Fall. They will carry a competitive stipend as well as allowances for travel and (reduced) tuition. Fellows will remain matriculated at their home universities but be in residence at Fermilab. To be eligible, prospective fellows must identify a Fermilab supervisor from the scientific staff of either the Theoretical Physics Department or Theoretical Astrophysics Department. These departments offer strong and exciting research opportunities in collider physics, model building, neutrino physics, perturbative QCD, lattice gauge theory, astrophysics, and cosmology. The research environment at Fermilab, while theoretically rigorous, is nourished by close connections with the laboratory’s experimental programs. Applications will be taken through academicjobsonline (if needed, select FFThPh2011). Applicants must submit a CV and a plan for research while at Fermilab. Applicants should arrange for their university supervisor to submit a letter of recommendation explaining not only the applicant’s suitability for fellowship but also how research at Fermilab would enrich the applicant’s graduate studies. Finally, the Fermilab staff member supervising the student’s research will have to prepare a short written summary of research goals during the fellowship. This summary may be written after the application has been submitted, but it is highly recommended that applicants contact potential supervisors as soon as possible. The selection committee will facilitate connections between applicants and potential Fermilab supervisors. Fermilab theorists’ contact information can be found by clicking on the departmental links at the bottom of this page.

PhD Scholarship in Genetic Analysis of Archived Tissue Collections from Fish, Denmark

Archived historical material from fish in the form of scales and otoliths is found in many research institutions across the Nordic countries. Such population samples constitute a unique source of DNA for conducting retrospective analysis of genetic changes over time. They allow identification of historical changes in the distribution, migration and abundance of fish populations, as well as temporal evolutionary changes within populations in response to environmental change. This project aims at performing genetic/genomic analysis on historical collections of cod and potentially other fish species from several Nordic populations in order to estimate the temporal stability of population structure as well as adaptive micro-evolution in relation to climatic variation. The insights on relationships between population structure, evolution and climate should be used in conjunction with forecasting models of environmental change in order to predict future distribution and abundance of fish populations. The project is part of a Nordic Centre of Excellence and will include collaboration with and visits to research institutions in Norway and Greenland.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:
* Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent, in Population- or Evolutionary Genetics
* Previous experience with molecular genetic analysis
* Proficiency in written and spoken English
* Keen interest in research and a wish to work in the field of population genetics and evolution of aquatic organisms

ESMT Offers MBA Students Two-Month German Course: Intensive language course

ESMT is giving its future students the chance to improve their German language skills courses at every level. For students enrolling at ESMT by the end of July 2011, ESMT will cover the tuition costs. For those who decide to come to ESMT after this date, the program will be offered at a discount.

Because of its strong economic growth Germany has become a highly attractive market for successful MBA alumni. The language courses are part of the support ESMT offers its students to find a job in Germany. Sixty per cent of the ESMT alumni already work in Germany after graduation. Nick Barniville, Director of MBA Programs, commented, “Thanks to the close relationship with our founding companies we know that German language skills are still highly important to find employment in Germany. We are glad that we were able to win the renowned Goethe Institute Berlin as partner for our students’ top level education.”

The intensive 8-week-training begins in mid-October and ends in mid-December, two weeks before the start of the MBA program. The future MBA students therefore have the chance to get to know Berlin before the beginning of their studies. The program also offers the opportunity to rent a room from German hosts and have direct contact with the German language and culture. The courses go half a day every weekday, and the students receive a certificate upon the successful completion of the course.

During the MBA program, ESMT continues to offer students weekly German lessons on campus; they can also take advantage of further Goethe courses at discounted rates after graduation.
