2011 PhD Position in Philosophy of Law, Radboud University, Netherlands

The PhD project involves writing a dissertation on the following topic: ‘Human Rights and Human Duties: Assessing the Obligations entailed in Human Rights’. You have an MA in Philosophy and/ or Law with a clear interest in a philosophical and conceptual approach to legal questions. Furthermore you should have excellent analytical and writing skills in English and Dutch. You have teaching skills or are willing to obtain these skills.The initial contract will be for one and a half years, which then will be renewed if the progress made under this first contract is satisfactory. An employment of 0,8 FTE is negotiable. Commencement date: 1 July (at the latest).

The research aims at the following objectives:
1. Analysing the conceptual link between human rights and human duties.
2. Developing a normative theory of human duties.
3. Proposing practical guidelines for the assessment of the legal implications of human duties.
Alongside the PhD research, the candidate is required to make a small contribution to the teaching of the Philosophy of Law department in the Bachelor of Law programme of the Faculty of Law.

SCIBE PhD Position at Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Norway: Scarcity and Creativity in the Built Environment

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design calls for applications to the open, full-time position as PhD research fellow for a three year period (1 August 2011 to 30 July 2014). The research fellow will be part of a large research project called Scarcity and Creativity in the Built Environment (SCIBE) funded by the European Union, HERA Program.The PhD position is based either at the Institute of Architecture or at the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape and requires full time residence throughout the three year period, including participation in the research education programme.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in a field of relevance to the SCIBE project. Preference will be given to applicants that:

Have undertaken research in a field relevant to the SCIBE project
Have experience of field-work and/or archival work.
Have published work.
Are fluent in Norwegian and English.

2011 PhD Studentship: fMRI Decoding of Mental State at Radboud University, Netherlands

We invite applications for a PhD position at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. You will be working on the NWO project Sparse Learning of Deep Models which aims to improve the decoding of what someone perceives or imagines from brain activity alone. In this project, you will develop probabilistic machine learning methods and collect fMRI data at the institute’s 3 Tesla MRI facility.

You are highly motivated and have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, or a related field of study. Experience with Matlab programming and data analysis is a must. Experience with functional magnetic resonance imaging and/or machine learning is desirable. You should have a demonstrated interest in and qualification for scientific research, be able to work in an interdisciplinary team in an international context, and have excellent writing skills in English.
