Providing clinical information on the toxicity of hazardous chemicals in humans in emergency situations is not straightforward. One major obstacle is that human data on toxicity of chemicals are scarce. Data on the toxicity of chemicals are available only from animal and in vitro studies, and from accidental chemical exposure of humans.

We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate (MSc) with a background in the field of (environmental) health sciences, or biomedical sciences. The candidate should have strong organisational, communication and writing skills (in Dutch and English). We are looking for a team player who is able to work independently. Experience in the field of exposure assessment or kinetic modeling will be an advantage.Candidates from the European Union and North America are eligible for this position.

Lulea University of Technology, PhD Position in Signal Processing, Sweden

The Signal Processing Group at the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering is looking for a new PhD student within the field of Measurement Systems Engineering. The topic of the research will be on the development of methods for on-line measurement and analysis of paper pulp properties and their connection to paper quality parameters.

We seek candidates with a MSc./Civ.ing. degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar areas, preferably with a strong interest and experience in mathematics, statistics, experimental design and signal processing. Previous experience in the design of measurement systems is also valuable. The collaborative nature of the project requires the student to be fluent in both Swedish and English, written and spoken.The application should include CV, university transcripts (tests/grades record) and contact details of at least two references.

2011 PhD Position in Molecular Ecology at University Centre in Svalbard, Norway

The appointed candidate must have a Master degree or equivalent in biology or biotechnology. A strong academic record with a weigthed average grade of master’s or equivalent education with a grade of B or higher isrequired. Good skills in English language, both oral and written are important. Documented experience in the use of general laboratory techniques and molecularmethods are preferred. Emphasis will also be placed on experience from field work, data analysis and statistics. Admission to the doctoral program at one of the Norwegian mainland universities is a condition of employment in the position as PhD student. The final plan for researcher education must be approved and a contract signed with the mainland University at the latest six months after commencement. The application will be prepared by the candidate and the supervisors.

The appointed candidate must livein Longyearbyen during the employment period. He/she is expected to contribute actively to ongoing scientific activities in the department. It is also expected that the Ph.D. student take an active part in the advancement of his/her field of research, and he/she must also be willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense. All salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government’s University salary scale. Ph.D students starts at salary step 48, which currently is a gross salary of NOK 383 700.As a resident in Svalbard an annual allowance of NOK 26 400.(Svalbardtillegg) will be added to the salary. A Social Security contribution of 2 per cent, to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, will be deducted from the salary. Income tax on.
