International PhD Studentship in Chemistry, Poland

The International PhD program “Towards Advanced Functional Materials and Novel Devices – Joint UW and WUT International PhD Programme” realized by the Faculties of Chemistry of Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) and University of Warsaw (UW), Poland, designed in cooperation with well-recognized international research Partner institutions.

3 students will be admitted to the first or second year of the International PhD studies.
PhD Projects listed below are still available:

UW-4: “Solution Thermodynamic of Ionic Liquids in Water, Aliphatic Alcohols and Hydrocarbons”
UW-5: “Organic semiconductors for organic electronics: synthesis, characterization and application in test devices”
PW-7: “Advanced polymeric materials – From calculation to application”

Duration of the program is 4 years, including 6-24 months spent abroad in the foreign Partner institutions.

A fellowship of 3000 PLN/month (tax-free) + 500 PLN/month (insurance) is offered, which compares well with the average salary in Poland. An additional allowance of 1500 PLN /month will be provided for the stay at the foreign partner institution.
Tuition fees for all coursework and health insurance are covered by the fellowship. The University will assist in finding accommodation.

Students from all countries are invited to apply.

PhD Position in Theoretical Chemistry, Aarhus University, Denmark

At this time (2011) there is a concrete opening for a phd position in the context of a Marie-Curie network associated with COMI (Center for Oxygen Microscopy and Imaging). The general problem to be addressed is development and application of theoretical/computational methods aimed at describing two-photon absorption.

Successful candidates are expected to have a strong background in Chemistry, Physics, Nano-science or similar, and have the ability and willingness to work with theory meaning both the basic equations, their realization in modern theories for electronic or nuclear degrees of freedom, programming and scientific computation.

It is important that the applicant can verify qualifications with respect to handling mathematical theories. Experience with running standard programs is partially assumed and definitely positive, but, however competent, is not enough.

Keywords, some of which should be strong points for the candidate includes: Theory, programming, Quantum Mechanics, ab initio electronic structure theory, vibrational structure theory, solvent effects, excited electronic states, photochemistry, QM/MM or fragmentation methods, coupled cluster theory, molecular quantum dynamics, C++, Scientific Computing, time-dependent quantum mechanics, response theory and molecular properties, anharmonic vibrational states, one- and two-photon absorption, photo-sensitizers.

Scholarship Application Deadline:before March 25 2011.

PhD Position in Ultracold Atomic Gases in Amsterdam, Netherlands

There is an open PhD position (4 years, full salary) in the atomic, molecular and laserphysics group of the VU University Amsterdam to setup an experiment for an ultracold mixture of metastable helium and rubidium.

The aim of the project is to observe Efimov trimers in an ultracold mixture of metastable helium and rubidium atoms. The large mass ratio between these two atomic species results in a dramatic reduction of the spacing between successive HeRbRb Efimov states, allowing a first experimental test of the periodicity of the Efimov spectrum. This research will lead to new insight in the emerging field of few-body physics with ultracold atoms, with the aim to better understand and control strongly interacting quantum matter.

Within the PhD project a new infrastructure for ultracold rubidium (87Rb) has to be built up and merged with an existing apparatus for laser cooling of metastable helium (including source and Zeeman slower).

We are searching for an experimental physicist who has already gathered experience in the field of laser cooling and trapping of atoms.

Starting date from 1st June 2011.
