March of Dimes Foundation Research Grants, Australia: projects related to causes of prematurity

The March of Dimes seeks applications requesting grant support for Research & Global Programs projects related to causes of prematurity. Research proposals of new paradigms based on strong conceptual frameworks are invited. The intent is to provide new insights into the large, and increasing, proportion of preterm deliveries in which the cause (and thus the means of prevention) remains elusive. The proposals need to consider especially, but not be limited to, genetics, gene-environment interactions, and animal models. We encourage novel approaches. Applicants must be members of not-for-profit institutions. Potential applicants should submit electronically the required administrative information and a Letter of Intent addressed to the Senior Vice President for Research and Global Programs summarizing the proposed studies via our online system

The Letter of Intent must include the following information in this order:

1. Its objective.
2. Major hypothesis to be tested and key specific aims.
3. Any preliminary data.
4. A brief description of the study design including key outcome variables and the statistical framework that
will be applied to the analysis.
5. A plan for evaluating the results.
6. Projected time frame for the investigation.
7. Current financial support: list each current grant or contract for the conduct of this and any other research. If there are no other grants, state “NONE.”
8. If this is a request for a renewal of a current March of Dimes grant, it must include a summary of its progress.
The online process must be completed by April 15, 2011.

Please do not include References Cited with your Letter of Intent. These grants do not cover the recipient’s or other faculty salaries, but do provide salary support for technical help. The grants are awarded for a three-year period. For your information, the financial characteristics of the
previous year’s grant cycle.

5000 Indigenous PhD Fellowship Program, Pakistan: all fields of Science & Technology as well as Social Sciences, Humanities and Life Sciences

These locally qualified academics and researchers will improve the R&D potential of public as well as private universities and it will also strengthen the local industrial sector.

With the launching of the scheme, research culture in public/private sector Universities has been developed in accordance with International norms/standards. This project is focused at diversified disciplines belonging to all fields of Science & Technology as well as Social Sciences, Humanities and Life Sciences. To enhance the research facilities in these fields the Higher Education Commission has funded many Departments/Universities to establish research labs. This has brought tremendous change in research culture of the Pakistani Universities.

HEC has kept great emphasis on indigenous scholarship schemes because locally trained researchers work on local problems of great national significance. Their research, therefore, is expected to have direct relevance to the growth and socio-economic development of Pakistan.

In addition, this scheme also provides funds to the Universities for upgrading their research facilities particularly small laboratory equipment, chemicals, IT equipment etc. which not only facilitates research of the HEC scholar but also serves as an asset for the department to establish up to date research laboratories.

Eligibility:
-Candidate should have a degree with minimum 16 years of education and no 3rd Division or Grade ”D” in his/her career.

-Must not be availing any other scholarship simultaneously.

– Maximum age on closing date of application is 35 years, except for people working on regular basis in public sector whose maximum age is 40 years.

– The Scholar will have to be a full-time student to avail the scholarship. Those who are employed have to arrange study leave for the full duration of the program.

PhD Fellowships in Molecular Microbial Ecology, Denmark

The aim of this research project is to further develop and improve the modern microbial metagenomics tools to study natural microbial communities. In this project we will use high throughput sequencing to study the composition of bacterial communities in various natural environments with great resolution.
Furthermore, the project includes studies of the presence and evolution of plasmid-borne traits in different natural habitats in order to resolve the role of the mobile gene pool in microbial adaptation. We are specifically interested in studying the effect of anthropogenic activity on the evolution and prevalence of multi resistant bacteria.

We expect that the applicants have obtained an MSc degree in biology or biochemistry, a good grasp of theoretical concepts, and some expertise in laboratory techniques used in molecular microbial ecology, DNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Fluency in English is a requirement.

An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The final selection will be made by the supervisors, Søren J. Sørensen and Lars H. Hansen and the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen.

Scholarship Application Deadline:14 April 2011
