Australian Bicentennial Scholarships and Fellowships 2011, UK: Humanities, Creative Arts, Education, Law, Social and Physical Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

Each year the Australian Bicentennial Scholarships and Fellowships Trust invites applications from Australian postgraduate students or academic staff members for Australian Bicentennial Scholarships and Fellowships tenable in the United Kingdom.
The objects of the scheme, as defined in the deed of Trust, are to ‘promote scholarship, intellectual links, and mutual awareness and understanding between the United Kingdom and Australia, in particular: a) to enable United Kingdom graduates to study in approved courses or undertake approved research in Australia; b) to enable Australian graduates to study in approved courses or undertake approved research in the United Kingdom; and c) to make allowance within the Scheme for disadvantaged persons.’
An applicant for a Scholarship must be registered as a post-graduate student at an Australian tertiary institution, or be eligible for such registration at a UK tertiary institution, and be usually resident in Australia. He/she should normally have at least an upper second class honours degree.
An applicant for a Fellowship should have a good post-graduate degree or equivalent experience, and should be seeking to further his/her education or professional experience but not through taking a further degree.
Candidates may be in any discipline (commonly in the humanities, creative arts, education, law, social and physical sciences, engineering and medicine), but they must demonstrate that there are special scholarly or practical advantages to be gained from a period of study in the UK, and that an appropriate host institution is available. Younger scholars are preferred, but while there is no formal age limit a scholar or fellow must be likely to be able to make a formal contribution in his/her field for at least ten years. Each scholarship or fellowship will offer a grant of up to £4,000, and may be used to supplement other awards. Please note that preference is often given to applicants who can demonstrate that a Bicentennial grant will complete a guaranteed funding package for the whole degree or project. A successful applicant must spend at least three months studying in the UK. A detailed report on the scholarship/fellowship is required within three months of the scholar’s/fellow’s return to Australia.

Doctoral Position in Mathematical Statistics, Lund University, Sweden

PhD-studies in Mathematical Statistics, comprising in total two years of course work and two years of thesis work. Usually additionally one year (20% each year of a five year period) is also dedicated to work at the department, mainly teaching.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

In addition to the basic qualifications for postgraduate studies, 60 ECTS credits are required in mathematical subjects, of which at least 30 ECTS credits in mathematical statistics. PhD Scholarship in Aquatic Ecology, Sweden

The aim of the research project is to identify the barriers to dispersal in a microalgal species that forms blooms in freshwater lakes. This research has implications for the understanding of the dispersal of microalgae and microorganisms in general, as well as for predicting the occurrence of new algal blooms. The approach is to determine the importance of physical versus biological dispersal barriers by analyzing the genetic diversity patterns. The current hypothesis is that physical dispersal barriers are important for generating genetic differentiation. Instead, differentiation among microalgal populations might be explained by so called founder effects. Founder effects refer to the dominance of strains or species that arrive first to a new habitat. In laboratory and mesocosm experiments, priority effects and invasion sequence will be investigated in the algal species Gonyostomum semen. The position will be based at the unit of Aquatic Ecology, Department of Biology, Lund University, in southern Sweden. The PhD project is a part of a larger project financed by Formas (The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning), and will involve collaboration with other PhD students and a group at Gothenburg University (Ass. Prof. Anna Godhe). The project is suitable for applicants who would like to combine ecology and population genetics with molecular biological tools. The practical work will include PCR-based techniques, analyses of population genetic data, algal culturing, and microscopy. Experimental work will be performed both in the laboratory and in the field. In addition, the PhD student will be able to join the Research School in Genomic Ecology (GENECO) in Lund. This program will give access to a network of other PhD students and researchers in genomic ecology, annual meetings, workshops, travel grants to visit other institutions, as well as a career mentor.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements
Requirements for this position are an MSc or comparable degree in ecology preferably with an aquatic and/or molecular ecological specialization. The successful candidate will have very good experience in molecular techniques. A driver’s license is required, as is very good knowledge of written and spoken English.
