2011-2012 Marie Tharp Fellowship at Columbia University, USA: Earth Science

The Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University invite applications for the Marie Tharp Fellowship 2011-2012. This fellowship is part of a greater EI/LDEO effort at promoting the advancement of women scientists. The purpose of the award is to provide an opportunity for earth scientists to conduct research at Columbia University for a period of 3 months.  Fellows will have an opportunity to work with faculty, research staff, post docs, and graduate students during their fellowship. Each fellow is expected to participate in EI/LDEO activities and make a scientific presentation during their residence. The duration of the Marie Tharp Fellowship is for 3 months over the period September 2011 through August 2012. Fellows are encouraged to visit for three consecutive months, but they may choose to take their fellowship in two separate visits. The fellowship must be taken in residence at one of the earth science units of the Earth Institute (see end for complete list of eligible units) and will provide up to $30,000 for support of the fellow during the three-month period.
Background: The fellowship is named after Marie Tharp, who was the first to map details of the ocean floor on a global scale. She published the pivotal interpretation of mid-ocean ridges that was crucial to the eventual acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift. Tharp came to the Lamont Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), where she began work on mapping the ocean floor. Her map of the ocean floor is still a foundation for research and education in the ocean sciences.
Eligibility:  The competition is open to junior and mid-career scientists in the earth sciences. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application. The goal of this award is to promote women in science. Faculty (full-time or adjunct) and researchers at Columbia University are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 March 2011

2011 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Sciences at RCAS in Nankang, Taiwan

The theory group in RCAS is carrying on a joint project for the development of multi-scale simulation tools. The goal is to integrate the electronic, transport, optical, mechanic properties into a software package suitable for the simulation at the level of devices (or a certain size of molecular structures). The main duty of the job is to develop and integrate various codes in different areas of physics/engineering together for comprehensive modeling.

We are looking for two potential candidates in the following two categories, respectively:
1. Ab inito computations in schemes such as density-functional theory (DFT) or similar approaches.
2. Computational electromagnetism/elasticity/optics/fluid mechanics.
Qualification
1. The potential candidates must have an extensive numerical coding experience in one of the areas mentioned above, and the knowledge of linux-based environment.
2. Candidates with experiences in parallel programming may be given priority. In accordance to the salary scale of Academia Sinica, but negotiable. The appointments are for one year and renewable if there is good progress.

Postdoctoral Position in Coastal Nitrogen Cycling at University of Southern Denmark 2011, Denmark

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position to explore the nitrogen cycle in coastal waters with particular focus on the use of stable nitrogen isotopes to trace processes and establish budgets. The candidate will be integrated in the research group in microbial ecology lead by Professor
Bo Thamdrup and associated with the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE) at the Institute of Biology. Research in these units focuses broadly on the role of microbes in the biogeochemistry of aquatic systems, and on the evolution of microbes and environments during Earth’s history.

The candidate should have a strong background in either biogeochemistry or microbial ecology with a completed PhD by the project start date, and preferably with experience in working with stable isotopes. The application materials should include a copy of full transcripts, including grades, a statement of research interests and background, as well as two letters of recommendation. The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment and teaching experience.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publication on which the applicant wishes to rely.
• A copy of full transcripts, including grades
• A statement of research interests and background
• Two letters of recommendation
• A list of all enclosures
The University encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of age, gender, religious affiliation, or ethnic background.
