African Union Research Grant Programme for International Applicants: Agriculture, Energy and water.

The African Union Commission is seeking proposals for research focusing on the following thematic priorities articulated in Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) and its Lighthouse Projects:
(a) Post-harvest and Agriculture,
(b) Renewable and Sustainable Energy, and
(c) Water and Sanitation in Africa.
The programme is financed through the Financing Agreement between the European Commission and the ACP Group of States under the ACP Research for Sustainable Development Program of the 10th EDF Intra-ACP Envelop.

Western Cape Provincia Government Scholarships for Social Development Clinical Social Work Honour Students, South Africa

Funds have been made available by the PGWC to meet the need and demand for professional specialist social workers in the treatment of substance abuse.
Applications are invited for a number of scholarships that are available to support students who will register in 2011 for full time study in the Department of Social Development at the University of Cape Town, and who will study specifically in the field of substance abuse.
The scholarship programme aims to encourage further education and specialist training of social work professionals in substance abuse interventions who work in either Provincial Government or non-governmental professional settings.
Academic Criteria
Eligible candidates will have a relevant Bachelor’s degree and applicants who have been employed as social work professionals either in provincial Government or in a non-governmental professional field are encouraged to apply.
The Value of the Awards: The scholarships are valued at R 22 900 each and are tenable for one year only. No renewal can be made for a second year of Honour’s study.

Research Scientist Position, International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture, Dubai

In partnership with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and funded by USAID, the Middle East North Africa – Land Data Assimilation System (MENA-LDAS) is being developed at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in Dubai. This research will generate data and scientific insight on regional surface- and ground-water resources.

The position is full-time fixed term (initially six months with the possibility of extension) with a competitive international package. The position is based at the ICBA campus in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Required Experience:

* Expertise in analysing GRACE, and if possible MODIS and TRMM data as well.
* Experience in working with numerical models (hydrology, hydrogeology, SVAT or climate).
* proven ability to handle/analyze spatio-temporal data sets relating to environmental monitoring and models as well as to remote sensing.
* Expertise in scientific programming (ideally FORTRAN, Unix or PERL).
* Experience with ENVI and ArcGIS.

Educational qualifications:
Masters-degree level education and advanced skills in Remote Sensing, Hydrological Science, Environmental Science or a related discipline.

Collaboration with the other members of the MENA-LDAS team will be essential to the post, offering ample opportunities to broaden the successful applicant’s expertise.
