PhD Candidate ‘Drug-Induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction’, Netherlands: Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell Biology

This project aims to address fundamental questions concerning the effects of drug related toxicity on mitochondrial function by making use of the nematode C. elegans as a model system. The main questions that will be addressed concern the quantative analysis of drug-induced ROS production and oxidative damage in relation to mitochondrial function, assembly and ageing. The work is embedded in the theme ‘Quantitative systems analysis of biological stress response’ and will be reinforced by the start of a new PI, after a post-doc at Stanford, who will use C. elegans to study mechanisms of ageing.
Requirements

* A master degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell biology, or Molecular biology (or equivalent)
* Experience with molecular biological techniques, protein techniques
* Interest in quantitative analysis
* Experience with C. elegans is an advantage
* The ability to work in a team as well as independently

Postdoctoral Position, Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Kraków

Key responsibilities include:
1. synthesis and evaluation of novel photosensitizers for PDT

Profile of candidates:
1. PhD in life sciences or biomedical sciences, obtained not longer than 4 years ago
2. research experience (reflected in the publication record) in:
post 1: design, synthesis and evaluation of photosensitizers for PDT
post 2: spectroscopic investigations of photosensitizers or photosynthetic pigments and complexes
3. good knowledge of English language
4. strong motivation to research and experimental work

PhD Student for Molecular Carcinogenesis, Netherlands: Biomedical Sciences

Recurring chromosomal abnormalities have been identified in a variety of cancers, but are most frequently associated with haematological malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML). These cytogenetic changes often cause gene fusions leading to expression of chimeric oncofusion proteins. In this project you will focus on unravelling the role of these oncofusion proteins in carcinogenesis. Your aim will be to identify the binding regions, the transcriptional consequences and epigenetic features associated with oncofusion protein expression. You will use next-generation sequencing to identify oncofusion protein target sites, which then will be further characterized, structurally as well as functionally, in relation to the aetiology of acute myeloid leukemia.

Requirements
You should have:
• an MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences/Biology/Molecular Life Sciences/Bioinformatics;
• experience in Molecular and Cell Biology and/or Bioinformatics;
• a strong affinity for fundamental research related to human disease;
• a well-structured working style;
• well-developed social and communication skills.

Conditions of employment
Employment: 1,0 fte
Maximum salary per month, based on a fulltime employment: € 2,612 gross/month
The starting salary is € 2,042 per month and will increase to € 2,612 per month in the fourth year. PhD scale.
