Postdoctoral Position in Chemical Process Intensification, Netherlands

We have a post doc position available on the following themes:
Oxidative coupling of methane, ethylene, synthesis gas, dual function catalyst, membrane reactor.

Abstract
The direct route for the production of ethylene from natural gas via oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) in a single step is still high on the industrial wish-list, but has proven a major scientific and technological challenge. However, when the exothermic oxidative coupling of methane is combined with endothermic steam/dry reforming of the by-products of the OCM and additional methane, ethylene and syngas can be produced simultaneously in an autothermal process. Thus, a higher methane conversion (avoiding a large methane recycle) and efficient use of the by-products of the OCM is combined with optimal heat integration.

The integration of the exothermic and endothermic reactions is optimally achieved on the catalyst particle scale, which would make the reactor configuration much simpler (no lateral temperature gradients in the reactor) and cheaper compared to a non-isothermal membrane reactor. Detailed simulations on the integration of the reactions on the particle scale have been carried out in a previous ASPECT project titled ‘Simultaneous production of ethylene and synthesis gas combining the oxidative coupling and reforming of methane in a reverse flow membrane reactor with a dual function catalyst’, and have shown that it is theoretically indeed possible to integrate the oxidative coupling and steam reforming of methane on the particle scale, making effective use of intra-particle mass transfer limitations.

The simulations have led to a first possible design of the dual-function catalyst particle. In this follow-up project, we propose to actually fabricate the dual-function catalyst and to demonstrate its performance for the combined autothermal process experimentally. The deliverables of the project are new knowledge on the fabrication of dual-function catalysts, detailed reaction kinetics for this reaction system and an experimental proof-of-principle of reaction integration on the particle scale in a packed bed membrane reactor.

Requirements
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic post-doc with a master degree in Chemical Engineering, with solid background and a strong research and publication record in the area of heterogeneous catalysis and/or membrane reactors. The candidate is required to have a sound experience in experimental work as well as modeling of chemical reactors.

Applicants are expected to have excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical staff, ability to work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, excellent knowledge of written and spoken English, good attitude to lead their own projects.

PhD Scholarships in Environmental Engineering/Biotechnology, Denmark Technical University

The scholarships are supported by several research grants (MIRESOWA, DW Biofilter, Ecodesign MBR) with the objective to develop and optimize biotechnological solutions for drinking water and wastewater handling.

The drinking water projects have a specific emphasis on analyzing and optimizing biological rapid sand filtration technologies for both bulk and trace pollutant removal. The wastewater project has a specific emphasis on analyzing and optimizing autotrophic N removal in membrane-bioreactors. In both projects, candidates are sought with training and interest in one or more of the following: molecular microbial ecology, bioprocess engineering, and process modeling.

The successful candidates will be employed at DTU Environment within the framework of the Urban Water Technology graduate school (www.urbanwatertech.dk), and work under the supervision of the PIs and post-doctoral associates. DTU Environment offers state-of-the art chemical, microbial, and biomolecular analytical facilities, process laboratories, and equipment to execute this project. These project benefits from several interactions (and possible research exchanges) with other leading research groups in DK, EU, and USA and interactions with leading-edge technology providers.

This research is supported by the projects MIRESOWA, DW Biofilter, and EcoDesign MBR, funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research (DSF).

The 6 PhD scholarships
PhD1: Molecular mapping of the diversity of ammonia and iron/manganese oxidizing bacteria at full-scale biological rapid sand filters.

PhD 2 & 3: Analysis and optimization of conditions that drive biological ammonia or iron/manganese removal in bench-scale rapid sand filters.

PhD 4: Model-based Analysis and Optimization of biological rapid sand filters at pilot and full-scale.

PhD 5: Trace pollutant removal via bioreactive barriers in groundwater extraction wells: Characterization and enhancement of microbial processes

PhD 6: Molecular and microscopic analysis of spatial and metabolic interactions in nitritation/annamox bioaggregates

Qualifications
The successful candidates will have a high motivation for research and solid written and oral communication skills. The applicants will enjoy working in and contributing to an international and cross-disciplinary research team. English is the operational language of the department.

At the date of appointment, candidates must have obtained a M. Sc. in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, Microbial Ecology or related discipline, evidence of research experience, and significant exposure to one or more of the following fields: basic molecular microbiology; microbial ecology; mathematical modeling and computational analysis applied to environmental/microbial systems; bioreactor technology.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

EBI–Sanger Postdoctoral (ESPOD) Programme, UK

The EBI–Sanger Postdoctoral (ESPOD) Programme builds on the strong collaborative relationship between the two institutes, offering projects which combine experimental (wet lab) and computational approaches. Projects may be selected from the areas defined below or proposed by the applicant. Applications should consist of:

(b) CV with two references;
(c) project proposal if the candidate opts to propose a project themselves (please note that this is not required if a project is selected from the list of available projects). Self-proposed projects should be described in a maximum of 1000 words and must be pre-approved by the group and team leaders involved before the application is submitted.

Interviews and selection process will take place from mid-September to mid-October 2010. Interviews will include one-to-one discussion with the group leaders associated with the project of interest and also a panelinterview.

Fellowships are expected to start from mid-October 2010. Fellowship start dates can be delayed in agreement with the project leaders but must be undertaken within 12 months of the fellowship being awarded.
