PhD Scholarship in Biological Sciences, Australia

A full-time PhD scholarship is available in Biological Sciences in the CORE area of Ecology and Evolution at Macquarie University.

Project Name: Biosphere Dynamics
Possible research topics might include:

  • Global bioclimatology: analysis of present and modelled past and future changes in key variables influencing the distribution of terrestrial organisms
  • Fundamentals of primary production: synthesis of relevant observations and testing of alternative global models for natural ecosystem and crop productivity
  • Global water resources assessment: coupling river routing and land-surface process models for present and future applications
  • Large-scale data analysis of quantitative plant traits as a basis for a new generation of dynamic global vegetation models

Candidates should have a good undergraduate degree with first class honors or equivalent, in a relevant subject. Students with physical science backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. Demonstrated aptitude for independent research (eg. a good Masters project), and quantitative and computational skills, are required.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 January 2011

Post-Master’s or Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, USA

The Center for  Engineering Science Advanced Research (CESAR) in the Computer Science and  Mathematics (CSM) Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks  candidates for innovative research in computational and theoretical nonlinear  dynamical systems.
Work will involve development of novel methodologies,  computer codes and algorithms to model the dynamics of semiconductor and fiber  lasers/amplifiers and laser arrays and their implementation on parallel  distributed multicore processor platforms. Successful candidates must have  proven experience in optics/lasers, nonlinear dynamical systems, and strong  computational skills. Programming skills in FORTRAN 95/2003 Linux and Windows  systems are desirable. The positions require MSc or, preferably, PhD degrees in  Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Theoretical  Physics, or related fields. Exceptional candidates with a BSc degree will also  be considered.

Scholarship Application Deadline: Applications may be submitted throughout the year, and appointments may begin at any time.
