Three Sino-Danish PhD Scholarships Available within the Area “Water and Environment”

In collaboration with The Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC)* in Beijing, China, Aarhus University hereby offer three PhD scholarships within the following five topics:

1) Cereal crop productivity and nitrogen cycling under climate change

2) Influence of land-use and management on nitrogen leaching in two agricultural catchments in China and Denmark

3) Climate change effects on trophic dynamics in streams with special emphasis on the role of fish

4) Nitrogen dynamics in lakes and implications for trophic dynamics

5) Carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions in wetlands

For more information on the specific topics and how to apply follow the links above. Applications should be submitted online and remember to state in the heading of your cover letter/application which topic(s) you apply for. The three topics receiving the best qualified candidates will be offered a full PhD scholarship,

The PhD students will be enrolled at Aarhus Faculty of Science and Technology and at GUCAS (Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and receive a double degree from the two institutions. The candidates must be willing to stay at least 1 year in China during the PhD period. Chinese citizens are not eligible for the scholarships.

Scholarship Application Deadline:15 March 2011

PhD Scholarship in Biological Sciences, Australia: Biosphere Dynamics(Ecology and Evolution)

Biosphere Dynamics (Ecology and Evolution)
Employer: Macquarie University
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: A full-time PhD scholarship is available in Biological Sciences in the CORE area of Ecology and Evolution at Macquarie University.

Project Name: Biosphere Dynamics
Possible research topics might include:

  • Global bioclimatology: analysis of present and modelled past and future changes in key variables influencing the distribution of terrestrial organisms
  • Fundamentals of primary production: synthesis of relevant observations and testing of alternative global models for natural ecosystem and crop productivity
  • Global water resources assessment: coupling river routing and land-surface process models for present and future applications
  • Large-scale data analysis of quantitative plant traits as a basis for a new generation of dynamic global vegetation models

Candidates should have a good undergraduate degree with first class honors or equivalent, in a relevant subject. Students with physical science backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. Demonstrated aptitude for independent research (eg. a good Masters project), and quantitative and computational skills, are required.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 January 2011
