Canadian Window on International Development Awards, Canada

These awards reflect the fact that the boundaries between international development policy and domestic policy increasingly parallel similar problems in developing countries so that both Canada and the less developed countries benefit from research on these issues. The complexities of national economic and social development in Canada are increasingly evident, and are often related to international issues. Similarly Canadian trade, investment, immigration and other policies often affect development in less developed countries. These awards will support research that illustrates these interrelationships. In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, Fellowships and Awards is not supporting awards which involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe or Central Asia.

Special Feature of this Award
Successful candidates will propose comparative research requiring data from both Canada and a developing country to better understand the common, interrelated problem/issue, identified by the applicant. Selection will favor proposals that demonstrate:
* the relevance of the research topic for Canada and for the developing country or countries being studied; and
* the close linkage between the international and national component of the topic.

Successful proposals will also identify the potential for Canada and the developing country to learn from one another in dealing with the shared problem or issue.

Two Types of Canadian Window on International Development Awards

1) IDRC offers one award for doctoral research that explores the relationship between Canadian aid, trade, immigration, diplomatic policy, etc, and international development and the alleviation of global poverty.

2) A second award will be granted for doctoral or master’s research into a problem that is common to First Nations or Inuit communities in Canada and a developing region of the world.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
* Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status in Canada, or hold a citizenship of a developing country;
* Be registered at a Canadian university;
* Be conducting the proposed research for a doctoral or Master’s dissertation;
* Must have completed course work and passed comprehensive examinations by the time of the award tenure.

Please note: Master’s level students are only eligible to apply for the award pertaining to research into the First Nations or Inuit communities and a developing country.

The Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship Programme 2011-2012, Kenya

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.

Geographic Scope
The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches, affiliates or other AKDN agencies which can help with processing applications and interviewing applicants. At present, these are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.

Selection Criteria
The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

Loan Conditions
Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.

Application Procedures
The application procedures of AKF’s International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained, or to the address indicated on the front of the form. They should not be sent to Geneva.

Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries 2011

This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country.

* Please read the following information carefully before applying.
* Only women scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and/or one of the Least Developed Countries can apply.
* Host institutions must be located in a developing country.
* Applications that are incomplete or illegible cannot be considered. Please make sure all the requested enclosures are submitted together with your application.

The Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) with funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a Ph.D., at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country.

The general purpose of the scheme is to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in science and technology, and to promote their effective participation in the scientific and technological development of their countries.

The specific aims of the scheme are:

* To improve access to educational and training opportunities in science and technology for young and talented women graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs.
* To increase the scientific productivity and creativity of women scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs.
* To empower a new generation of talented women to assume a leadership role in science and technology and their application to sustainable development.
